In fact, I prefer the music from the mid 90's where it was usually just the 5 of them. Think of it like this, most of the material that most people consider to be the "best" by DMB was created pre-butch.... I think. Was butch around in '98 for BTCS? I don't think so.
I think he was on the recordings. Not sure if he toured.
From a Q&A with Butch:
Q: How did you get hooked up with the Dave Matthews Band?
A: I went to [James Madison University] in ’79 with the [Dave Matthews Band’s] saxophonist LeRoi Moore and played with him since then, and met [DMB] drummer Carter Beauford around 1980. The three of us have played in various musical settings since then. Carter and I were in a jazz fusion band in the mid-’80s. It was called Secrets, which wound up being a pretty famous band. … I was teaching at JMU and going to grad school and teaching at UVa, jazz piano. I turned [DMB] down at that time. We decided we’d see each other down the line. I got a call from the drummer in 1997 to play for “Before These Crowded Streets.” In ’98, [we] did some touring, and I’m on everything now. Which is a pretty cool place to be.

I consider him a member of the band, but he is not an "official" member. If you understand what I'm saying.

Really? Tim doesn't do anything with the band anymore. There's the occasional D&T or D&F tour, but that's just with Dave. Butch "guests" every show of every tour, and records in the studio as well.
Much more of a member of the band than Tim Reynolds, IMO.
I voted yes. I generally consider Butch a member of the band. It would shock me to not see him on tour.
