They pop up on ebay every couple months or so...thats really your best bet for finding one. Be prepared to spend $3k though...

They are out there. You have to constantly be looking. But to give some advice, you need to be prepared to act very quick once you find one....and be prepared to spend some $$$.

I almost bought one two weeks ago, but the price went too high

My experience is that they are currently going for around $4k....the one that got away from me went for more than $4,500.

I've heard those things have really awkward necks and are tough to play for someone used to a "normal" style. *shrug*

Thats a more accurate price now that I think about it. So yeah. At least $4k.

WOW.....you really think you are going to get a DM3MD for 4,500!! HAHAHAHAHAAAHHAAAA! Thats just great! The only way you can really get these are through private owners. They won't seel them, so you can't get one for that cheep. They only came out a few years ago, so why would people sell them for so cheep. Plus if you are looking for the same sound just get a HD-28V. The DM3MD and HD-28V are the SAME! The HD-28V is 3,500. When you buy a DM3MD all you are paying for is Dave's Singature on the 12th fret, and the South African inlay wood, and thats it. Are far as body constrution goes the two are almost idenical. HD-28V has the forward shifted bracing which tends to let the top vibrate more and produces more volume. Same with the DM3MD. Plus if you are going to pay 3,500$ and more you should NEVER BUY A GUITAR OVER THE INTERNET FOR THAT MUCH!!!! IF YOU DO YOU ARE CCCRRRAAAZZZYYY! Cause you have never played it. If you want a HD-28V go down to the closest Martin dealer and ask for one, if they don't have one then you can find out when they are getting one in. But atleast if you oder it from the Martin Dealer you know your guitar will be coming straight from the factory in Nazareth, Pennsylvania, and it has never been played. It's too easy to get shafted over he internet!

Yeah.....um, just to let you know......I know someone who just bought a DM3MD from Sting's guitar tech.....HE BOUGHT IT FOR $3,500 AND IT IS #2. NOW, before you all go yelling at me saying that Dave has that #.....he does not. The guy called someone high up at Martin and they confirmed it from the serial #. He has all the papers and everything. Now, onto the price thing......a few have been on eBay for $4,000 and haven't sold. You can get them for $4,500 easily(if you can find it). But many sell them for more and you can even find em for less.

That being said, you can get MUCH more guitar for that much money. I personally believe that a DM3MD is only worth it for a very few people(me being one of them....it holds a special place to me and I will pay whatever I have to when I have $$$). It's just too expensive for most people wanting to buy a guitar. As you said.....get a D-28V

No they are not the same. The DM3MD is a combination of a HD28V and a D35. Look at the specifications, you'll see they are not the same...and I'm not talking about the use of the African wood. They do not sound the same either.

And Kanter is right about the price. The reason the DM3MD I spoke about got away is that I felt the price was to high (plus my wife would'nt let me  ). $4500 is steep for that guitar. I knew of one for sale for $6,500 that never sold...but I lost that contact.

Now, I haven't confirmed it, but I have read in some news groups that you can special order a guitar from Martin with the exact specifications as the DM3MD, same wood, etc. but does not have the Dave Matthews sig inlay. I'll have to look into that more.

I do believe that $6500, DM3MD, you were referring to is mine. One might be inclined to say that I am out of my mind to even ask that much money, however, my contention is, I at the time needed money, for school, and really did not want to sell it but would IF and only IF I was more than compensated. It actually pained me to even put a number on a instrument which I hope to own for the rest of my life, like jkanatar, it is very dear to my heart and hardly a day passes which I do not play it.

As far as trying to get one GOOD LUCK, I got lucky and found one on ebay, the guy had no idea what it was worth, and I feel that I stole it. It was not in perfect condition and took me about two weeks of elbow grease with wood conditioner, cleaner and polish. And now, she is BEAUTIFUL, #101. I too am looking to buy another one. I had it insured and appraised at $6995, full retail.

And finally for those of you who think that you can get an equal of even, haha, better guitar for $3000. (I should get a bumper-sticker like this, but) my other guitar is a 1999, Taylor 914c, which is an absolute dream to play and is also quite beautiful in its own way. However, nothing, compares to my DM3MD, nothing. It does not have South African wood inlay, It has a three piece back with the finest rosewood flanking African Paddock wood and that’s what gives it such a sweet mellow tone. It is incredible, I have like three guitar centers by my house and I go play everything in there, nice but not as smooth and warm as is the Martin.

Sorry for the long post, but it is my favorite subject, and I was just playing her and came on here to ask a question about, what is the best way to mute the B and E strings on Say goodbye. Index finger?
