Jamming

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Jamming

Unread post by cryfreedom07 » Thu Apr 13, 2006 8:00 pm

I would just like to post a little rant on here and maybe get see how other people feel. I went to both nights at Saratoga this past summer and was tailgating all day saturday. I brought along my guitar and ran into another guy playin some Dave so i asked him if I could join. I sat down and played a couple songs with him and I did a little bit of impov, adding my own stuff in. The guy didn't even really jam with me. He just went on playing the song. Don't get me wrong I'm no Tim Reynolds but I think I can make it sound pretty good. Anyways my point is that I think that if people are going to play Dave then they should be able to relax a little bit. This guy played every song exactly how he heard it from Live at Luther or other live shows. I think in the spirit of the "Dave" way of playing maybe we should be a little more open and creative with the songs. Dave can get up on stage with guitarists like Warren Haynes, Carlos Santana, and Robert Randolph and they just play jam together. In no way am I comparing myself to these guys but I don't really think its that hard to repeat the verse or something and let someone play a little bit. Apologies for such a long post.

could it be that he wasnt really good enough to improv and might have been a little embarrassed so he stuck to what he knew? or he could just be a dick who knows

or maybe, he was being a good rythm (SP) guitarrist, and holding the song, so you could solo all over it? :-roll

what do you think dave does at live shows when others are jamming? he plays the same thing for minutes on end, seek up being a very good example of that - he was probably wanting you to solo more, and if you still weren't feelin it, you could have told him to play something else, or let you play more of it, thats all

Sorry guess I wasn't clear. He was singing and during a break in the lyrics I would try to solo a little bit and he would cut me off and keep on singing. Everything he did was an exact replica of a version of the song. I'm just saying that he could loosen it up a bit and get a little more into the music rather than worry about making it sound just the way dave does it. But i guess i could just be being picky, he was singing and stuff so its his call on how the song goes.

some people just dont have that it that it takes to jam like that. a friend of mine has a lot of talent but he is so focused in on what hes playing, which are generally lacking in creativity, just flashy typical solos, and doesnt hear the whole sound. he knows a lot of other songs and is great at playing them, but he doesnt have the ability to just jam them out. some peeps are like that.

i kinda don't think so, that we're being rough about this that is - i mean i could "feel the music" and really get into it jamming to dave songs and be totally happy just playing the rhythm guitar line - i think the hardest thing about this situation is that he didn't know the guy, they both don't know the other's skill level, and no one wants to look like a dick - my suggestion is just have fun, but try jamming with people you do know, much more fun and easier to suggest stuff cause you know the guy

my $.02

jamming with people you dont know at all has some cool aspects to it. as for the dude not jamming, maybe he just didnt feel like it. maybe he just wanted you to add fills. not really a reason to get mad.

There could be many different reasons why this guy just played it the exact way as L@LC. You walked in on this guy's little party maybe you should've just layed low in your playing instead of trying to solo all over the place.
