what is my squire made out of?

I recently decided to take on my first guitar building project by using Warmoth parts but I was a little turned off by the price of everything because I was doing this to save some money...

well I decided I would try to save $250.00 by painting the guitar myself. I Have an old squire strat that's just sitting in my closet so I took it apart and stripped the paint off so I could practice on it before I ordered the warmoth body.

well, after stripping the paint off of my squire strat, i was very suprised by how nice the wood underneath looked. I could put a clearcoat finish on this thing and it would look beautiful! well i was always under the impresson that all of the parts on squires were very cheap, but the wood actually looks like good quality (from what i can tell). i checked musiciansfriend and it says that the squires they sell are made of alder. does anyone know exactly how inferior a squire body would be to a fender body?

because if it's a nice piece of wood, i jut might forget about getting a warmoth body and go with this instead.

how old is it?

I have anearly/mid 90's fnder squier, and you can't even see that it is a squier. I am doing the same things as you currently and was also very impressed with the wood. I am painiting mine, but am stuck right now since I really dont know what to use or how to go about it, but i am pretty sure it is alder and it is worth keeping if you ask me. it's the rosewood finger board and shitty electronics I dont like. but I have also gotten a lot of compliments on how well it sounds.

hey that's awesome, maybe we can help each other out a bit.

Mine is from the mid 90's. I don't know for sure because it was bought from a pawn shop but i'm fairly certain.

I'm pretty sure it's alder too, the only bad thing is that upon close examination I can see that it is at least 3 or 4 pieces glued together. I've been told you really wouldn't notice the difference in tone THAT much.

but i think i'm going to stick with this body. I'm currently in the process of getting a quilted maple vaneer to put on top. with the right dye job and burst, i'm hoping to end up with something like this

after the body is done i think i'll get an used american fender neck off ebay and then upgrade all of the electronics. 8-)

thanks man, i appreciate the links.

but dont get your heart set on that stain job. I have done more than my fair share of carpentry and woodworking, and a finish like that is not easy. There is zero chance of doing it on your first time on a guitar.

I say either bring it to a professional, or dont get your heart set on it looking good. plan on it looking like shit, and then you can only be happy with the results.

well i'm no novice when it comes to woodworking and carpentry myself

I've done plenty of painting and staining before so i'm trying to stay optimistic here.

but really this is just practice, i'm not really expecting anything spectacular. the veneer only costs $20.00 and all of the painting supplies should be less than $50.

I know that if i do this through Warmoth that I will get an amazing job done, but i'm going to pay for it.

so i'm hoping that I'll get lucky and like the job I do and just stick with it.

i would love to know what consitutes shit though. granted squiers are not nice, they are shit now, but mid 90's and earlier they were pretty decent for the money.

Squiers are made out of shit, put together by 5 year old indonesians. Probly some of the worst guitars you can buy...literally

the only decent Squier I've played was a Jagmaster, and it is the only one I would ever reccomend spending money on.

I actually had compliments form a lot of people who figured it would have been a huge piece but were very impressed with its sound and quality.

New ones I am not to familiar with, but have fucked around on one and it was a monumental piece of shit.

actually, i bet I could post a pick of my squier with 3 other strats and no one could be possitive which it was.

sound wise although made in korea, I would put it up against a mexican strat which I think sounds damn fine for the $$$.
