- Random movie quote to make you seem hip and "with it": As long as there's, you know, sex and drugs, I can do without the rock and roll.
If you feel you arent making any progress on your own, try voice lessons. Practicing is good, but if you are practicing the wrong things you will ingrain them. I have seen many people become very good singers just by taking a few lessons and putting an honest effort into their practice.praisedave wrote:that is like the nicest thing ive ever been told. that really means alot to me man thanks. Ive found that the more i sing the better i get, i assume you remmeber some of the garbage i posted a while back. so i sing non stop. i have four art classes at school (i am an art NERD) and i listen to my ipod and sing the entire time, my class hates me.Machtimus wrote:Andy, not regarding the video you presented but rather the Never Knew one. There is definately great potential in your singing and playing, but you lack maturity and experience with your voice. I honestly think you could go far with a bit of vocal training. Keep it up.
i feel like i have some days where im pretty good and other where i cant hit a damn thing. im really hoping my voice matures into something decent, because thats what i lONG for, the ability to express myself through just acoustic guitar singer songwriter stuff, just express myself and be happy with how it sounds. I can hear it in my head, and i want it out.
Thanks for the encouragement, ya gave me a real boost, i had been down on my singing for a few weeks now, i feel like ive stagnated a little.
im workin everyday i promise.
Also, do everything you can to not hurt your voice like smoking. It is terrible for the voice. I havent smoked anything in a month and my range has dramatically improved. Just look at dave, his smoking is catching up to him and is keeping him from hitting high notes without screaming.
You do have a lot of potential and are one of the better guitar players on the boards, keep at it.
thanks manRunsWithBuffalo wrote:If you feel you arent making any progress on your own, try voice lessons. Practicing is good, but if you are practicing the wrong things you will ingrain them. Just saw the video today and here are my comments:
- Girl: She needs more presence and movement, and especially show that she's really enjoying the music.
She also needs to project her voice better. I think she can get that by singing "with the belly".
Maybe you should try to play songs that fit better her voice, or change the tone of some songs (with capo or whatever).
- Drums: Couldn't listen very well, but seemed ok.
- Bass: A little discoordinated and loose. Not coherent with the drums rhythm. I think he needs more concentration on the song.
- Guitar: I also agree that you were the best there. Nice rhythm and feeling. I just think you could mute a little more on Dave's songs. Just my opinion, though.
One day I was told about the states of learning and they perfectly fit a lot of things. For instance, "playing with a band":
1st stage: unconsciously unskilled: You don't know what's needed to play with a band, and you don't know how to do it.
2nd stage: consciously unskilled: You understand that you don't know the things needed to play with a band
3rd stage: consciously skilled: You know how to play with the band, but you have to be completely focused and "thinking about what you're doing"
4th stage: unconsciously skilled: You just play, without need to think about what you are doing.
I think your bassist, for instance, is between stage 2 and 3, which means that he needs to be focused on what he's doing.
The girl is on (or should be on) stage 2, where she must become aware of what she doesn't do well...
Maybe this got too long and you all know this crap. Sorry...
I find it interesting though, because it fits almost everything!
Overall it was nice and you just need to practice together.

mmkay...
so here's me, the bassist, seeing a lot of negative feedback
now, don't get me wrong, i appreciate criticism, i feel it helps me make it better, but you guys must not have listened past the first song
that show was the second time i'd ever played "save tonight," and i was not so good at it.
i thought i did okay, i'm not a braggart, but i don't think i'm terrible. at least listen to jimi thing and aatw before you finish your judgements.
thanks

Don't feel bad man, youre taking critiques from a bunch of guitar players who maybe occaisonally fiddle with a bass. Youre playing was pretty solid, just a little loud in the mix so when there was a rough part it stood out, thats all.
Youre playing does improve as the show goes on, but next time, don't bust out a song you havent rehearsed at all. Know that shit cold or dont play it.
Keep it up man

Do I listen to pop music because I'm miserable or am I miserable because I listen to pop music?

I agree they could listen a little more, but your Save Tonight comment has no weight to me because it's four chords the entire songJazzBassist114 wrote:mmkay...

This may be long, my bad, but I'm going to be honest....
My personal feeling (obviously this was done for fun, that's what music should be about at the core, but I shall digress) is that if a singer does not play an instrument they better be A. a fucking kick ass singer and B. they can connect with people/stage presence/the like.
The kid on bass reminds me of when I first tried to play with a band on a song I didn't know like 3 years ago and I just kind of stood there like a retard because I didn't know what the fuck I was doing.
Your rhythm is good, volume is too loud on your guitar. Could be the mix, the recording, but it's too much.
Back to the singer (at Grey St. now) is she nervous or something? I'm feeling a little depressed watching her because she looks so uncomfortable
You and the drummer (Grey St.) are locking in nicely (kill the bass player).
Do you have ANY monitors?
Skipped GGD.
Cannonball, mix is tough, good guitar work, really
There are a couple points where your singer goes a littler higher/softer and that sounds good, it's a change, you know, you got to mix it up (dynamics)
I've heard people say using a music stand is cool, I personally think it's busch league and insults the audience. Granted this is low key and you didn't charge money (did you?) but know the words or make them up.
Jimi Thing, well I think that no woman or at least no woman with this vox tone should be singing DMB songs. I am having fun watching/listening to the drummer and you though, that's some tight shit. Kid's keeping it on the one and shit. You ripped it up on this song nice work
Hallelujah. Oh Jesus, this is not a song you do if you aren't going to go 100%. It's like House of the Rising Sun or the slow Cash version of Long Black Veil. Band is waaaaay too loud and tempo is to quick. For me at least. (DYNAMICS!)
Side note, Leonard Cohen wrote Hallelujah if I am not mistaken.
Watchtower. Bass is mad lacking, and the vocals are not really working for me, it's not her voice, but maybe the key is not right for her and/or the constant tone of her voice.
I respect all people who make music, it takes guts to play in front of people. Keep playing! It looks like you're having fun!!!! If you're ever in Mass. let me know, you could show me how to play guitar (serious, I'm a hack at best).
Peace
