Last I saw, Sam Ash had all thier MIM Strats on sale for $299, which is a good deal when you can go play them and pick out the best one. But, I'm not sure if that was just a local deal or not.

for around $400 you have a couple options. First is the Standard Strat which many people are talking about here. Very good guitars for the money. Figure out what it is you are looking for though. The older, even the 2005 standard strats, have vintage frets. The 2006 models have some upgrades, including Medium Jumbo frets, which are easier to bend on. If you look, you can find these used for a very good price. One thing to do is the for sale ads on http://www.fenderforum.com

If you are ok with mail order, musicians friend is one way to go. however there are better places to get better prices. Call EMShorts guitars - http://www.wichitaband.com/guitar.html

or Wildwood guitars - http://www.wildwoodguitars.com/

wildwood has GREAT prices and are VERY nice. They will look at every guitar and give you the one YOU want. Musicians friend doesnt do anythign close to that. I just bought a 50th anniversary american standard strat from these guys, and it is an amazing guitar.

one last option, which is very underrated, is Agile guitars. they will make a les paul copy for around $300 that will blow your socks off. They are only available from a store called Rondo Music. Rondo sells normal brands in their showroom, but online its only korean. Dont get a douglas guitar, but look at the Agiles, especially this one - http://www.rondomusic.net/al28003tsashtop.html

if you want to hear reviews about these guitars, read here - http://www.fenderforum.com/forum.html?d ... ber=522511

many people say they are better then their low end gibsons.

good luck and enjoy
