DDTW Help

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

DDTW Help

Unread post by jacobie423 » Wed Mar 22, 2006 10:09 pm

Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question, but I recently started practicing this song, and I have it down pretty well except for a few things. When Dave plays it solo, he usually strums the intro and the breaks in the verse pretty loud, and then his strumming gets softer while he's singing. It also sounds like there's a ton of muting going on while he's singing, to give it that sort of plucking sound that I'm hearing. I'm kind of new to the guitar, but I was wondering how Dave gets that different sound from the breaks in the verse and when he's actually singing. Is it tough to master?

Thanks for your help.

Well if you're asking what I think you are...just dont strum so hard and that will make the tone softer.

No quite, when I listen to the verses of his solo performances, it almost sounds like he's muting every string, because it sounds really soft and like no string is really ringing, almost like a plucking. It almost sounds like he's picking individual strings instead of strumming. Maybe it's just me, but does anyone kind of get what I'm talking about?

I just watched the video of Dave from farmaid 2005 and it looks and sounds like hes doing a bit of palm muting during the verses and not strumming quite as hard. If you need an explanation of how to palm mute I can try to give one of it for you.

Yeah he definitely uses his right palm to mute the sound during the verse. Also, don't hit the open D string.
Do I listen to pop music because I'm miserable or am I miserable because I listen to pop music?

I use my right palm to mute the sound during the verse.

Keep practicing this and other Dave songs. It will naturally come to you...

Palm muting rocks once you get the hang of it ... it seems that Dave palm mutes most of his songs during the verses
