there are a lot of mics that out do the sm57 for direct micing of a guitar

a condenser mic usually works best

Dave doesn't use one. He uses his pickup. (During some of the earlier D+T tours, the crew mic'd both dave's and tim's guitars, but that was informal.)

On the DMB webpage, click on the TECHNICAL link. They have all the equipment the band uses, maybe Dave +Tim shows also.

The SM57 is usually used to mic an electric amp when used with guitar. I have direct mic'ed my acoustic with it, but a condenser mic sounds much better. There are a few condensers that are under $100 that will suffice. I actually picked up an MXL57 condenser for $40 from Musician's Friend. It has been great so far, especially for the money.

From the instruction manual, you are supposed to mic the SM57 within 6" from the guitar, usually mic'ed around the 12th fret. Any closer or by the soundhole seems to hamper playing.

My suggestion is a condenser. Anyone else?

definitely a condenser, its too difficult to get decent sound out of the sm57 for direct guitar mic
