Considering upgrading, would like some advice

Unread post by Gold » Mon Mar 20, 2006 3:20 pm

Hey all

I bought a Taylor Big Baby in Canada a year ago, and a Fender Nashville Deluxe last christmas. Guitar prices here are ridiculous, so I got a sweet price on the Taylor, especially considering it was second hand. I believe I paid something like $400 for it, which is probably half the price I'd have to pay for a new one here in Norway. I'm guessing I can get $400 for it if I sell it now.

Now, I really haven't been playing the Fender much at all. I feel like I don't know how to start learning how to play an electric, and whenever I do play it it's not nearly as fun as the acoustic. I also got a really nice deal on this one. It was brand new, and the standard price for it here is $1000. I got it for $600, because of some almost unnoticeable water damages to the paint on the headstock, and I can probably sell it for that much as well.

Now I feel it's annoying to have this nice electric guitar just standing there in my room. As I said, I hardly ever play it, and the idea of selling both the electric and the Taylor to get a better acoustic is really tempting me. I found a used Martin D15 today that I could get for $1000 (keep in mind that the prices here are insane), and I really feel like just getting rid of my guitars and get that one:

There are some other really nice guitars out there that I'd like as well, like a used Landola JC-855, that also sells for $1300:

Landolas are simply amazing guitars, and the ones I've played totally blew away all the Martins and the Taylors in the same price range. I've been wanting one ever since I first tried them, but I couldn't find any in Canada and the ones here have been too expensive (they're rare). There's also a custom guitar for a Norwegian blues musician that I played last summer which was amazing, and cost a bit more than $1000. It was semi-acoustic, though, and I'm not sure if I want/need that.

So what I'm looking for is some advice. Do you think I'd regret getting rid of my electric? I mean, there might come a time when I really wanna start getting into the whole electric thing instead, and then I'll have to pay a lot more to get an equally good guitar as the one I own now. Also, do you think a Martin D15, a Landola or any other guitar in that price range will be enough of an upgrade from my Taylor Big Baby to justify going through all the hassle of selling the ones I own now?

ok thanks for the reply. I've been checking out different Norwegian guitar webshops, and none of them seem to sell the d15. The guy bought it in the states, and he says it's in mint condition. Have you ever played a Taylor Big Baby? If so, how did you think it compared to a d15?

btw, whether or not Fender is any good is kind of besides the point, as I'm just worried about regretting letting go of my only electric guitar.

The D15 is without a doubt superior to a Taylor Big Baby. I've played both and there's no question.

And seriously. Fenders don't suck.

ok, thanks Brian. Is this right: D15 > DM > D1 ?

And I agree, Fenders are nice. I'm embarassed to own mine when I can hardly play it.

hmm, I have no idea about that. sorry.

And about losing your electric, if it means anything I'm pretty competent at electric, and I would definetly choose an acoustic over an electric if I *had* to choose.

Just a note- I didn't realize the case that some people on these boards don't really play electric. That's not bad in any way, it's just like I'm kind of opposite because I am primarily an electric player who is also proficient at acoustic.

Anyways, It sounds like that Martin is your best bet, Gold.

If you don't play the electric then I wouldn't worry about selling it. If you feel the need to play electric sometime in the future you can always pick one up. Sure, it would be kind of a hassle, but would you rather have that guitar sit there unused for a long time?

That didn't make much sense. It sounded better in my head, I hope you can understand.
