Where to Begin??

Unread post by dixiechicken » Sun Oct 19, 2003 2:36 pm

It seems that Stay should wait a little while...
Where should I start? Any advice reccomendations at which songs to tackle first? If anyone could spare me some advice - like name 5 songs to start with - it would be super appreciated. Thanks for all the help - the site rocks!

Crush, Crash, Lie In Our Graves, Ants Marching, and Satellite...those are all easy/moderately difficult to get the hang of (except Satellite, that's more of a difficult one) and those should give you a taste of a lot of different ideas on the guitar. Don't listen to me though, pick songs you like and bust your butt to learn them, just have fun with it!
B+P by offer only...thank you

proudest monkey, seek up, minarets, some of the older but gems of dmb are easiest to tackle, once you get the hang of dave's style than the rest will come pretty easily.

I think Stay's a lot more easy one than Lie in our graves or Ants. I don't know but I took up stay very naturally.
I wouldn't learn LIOG or Ants to start. I'd say STJL or AATW would be better. These songs contain mostly open chords which are a lot easier to catch up at first...

I'd say that Crush is pretty easy, Halloween is another easy one, LIOG isnt too bad and is also one of the most fun to play, Watchtower is a good one, 41 isnt too hard (if your skip the intro), Big Eyed Fish is pretty basic. Pick songs that you really want to play, you'll put a lot more into it that way...it may take you a long time to get it, but you'll be a lot happier in the end

I learned billies first. Even when I thought I "had" it, I didnt actually play it right for a long time. Its hard, but after that one, everything else is cake.

The very first song I learned to play was Crash. The week after that I learned Jimi Thing and Lie In Our Graves. Ever since then I've been hooked, and that was four years ago! Enjoy playing man... just get a song down and love the hell out of it. It will make you feel alive.

I say crash. its good for strumming and to get used to some stretches this crazy bastard oes in his riffs. lol. ants and lie in our graves are al ittle more difficult, but they're so much fun to play, and they are good for picking notes, and little mutes here and there.

so to sum up!! crash, ants, lie in our graves.

Ok, well typical situation is definitly the easiest. But the first that I loved to play was #41. Now, for the intro I first used this little configureation until I got used to the stretch:
53x5xx 75x7xx x75x7x x54x3x

if it goes EAGDBE
thats all. And remeber, dont just learn a part of a song, that really pisses people off(or just me?)

no that's everyone. i think we all did it when starting off, but you shouldn't that's my advice and many others would agree. sit your ass down and learn an entire song instead of being the "i can play 50 different 5 second intros" guy.....that's my opinion

yeah everyone starts off on intros, but if you don't progress to the whole song what's the point?
