Leo Kottke

Unread post by brian_ok » Sun Mar 12, 2006 5:16 pm

I was showing this drummer I play with at church some Justin King today, and he said that I sounded like Leo Kottke...has anyone ever heard of this guy?

Judging by his site, http://www.leokottke.com, he's pretty well-established, but I've never heard of him. If anybody has any live/unofficial recordings of him that you could put up, that would be much appreciated...thanks.

Leo Kottke is the man. This guy has been shredding for well over 30 years, and has put out some amazing music. I was listening to a live show from 1972 the other morning, where he was flat out incredible.

His style can vary - he plays soft mellow music and harder faster tunes as well - I would highly recommend checking out a wide variety of what he has played. He still tours (he was here in Virginia a few months ago) so check to see if he is coming your way sometime.

leo kottke is my hero. hands down, my favorite guitarist.

http://www.abandonhope.shetland.co.uk/lk_clips.htm

that site has a bunch of full concerts in .ram video. the video quality is awful, but the audio is pretty good, and you can at least get an idea of what his hands are doing.

i'd recommend checking out "the fisherman" from montreux '80, and "airproofing 2" from sessions at west 54th. for a taste of his slide work, try "june bug" from paul smith college. want to hear him sing? go for "deep river blues" on sessions at west 54th.

if you think you might wanna get an album or two, i'd recommend starting out with 6 and 12 string guitar or one guitar, no vocals. he's also got a dvd coming out on april 4th, actually a re-release of a long out-of-print vhs tape.

http://www.guitarmusic.org/ is a fantastically comprehensive kottke fan site.

One of my favortie, if not favorite, guitarists. Definitely pick up his albums with Mike Gordon as well.

I love Kottke. Check out the album "Standing in my shoes." I think it's a best of album, but I'm not totally sure.
