HELP!! With Stay
Can anybody give me some helpful hints on playing Stay? I have only been playing guitar for about two months now, and totally love this song. With which fingers do I mute? Any other hints would be swell.

sorry, im just being honest, after playing for two months, i knew better than to try this songTrippin Hillbilly wrote:Damn josh............![]()
Dave uses his 2nd and 3rd fingers to mute the strings and the 1st and 4th to fret them.
but i will give a tip if you insist on trying it: keep your strumming hand at a constant up and down pattern during the verse

You have to listen to the song A LOT before you can get the strumming pattern down. Be careful not to strum open strings.

Forget about being guilty, we are innocent instead

i don't think you really need to worry about strumming open strings...you need to worry about muting them. maybe that is what you meant though. at least when i play it i don't worry about what strings i am hitting (usually all of them for a percussive sound) but i concentrate more on laying my 2nd and 3rd fingers across any open strings so they don't ring out

I can still give advice, though. On that logic, you can't tell people that they can play Sream in 2 months of playing. Just saying.
I am basing it off of an average player, and it's just a suggestion, nothing more. Unless he gives us more info, we can't do anything but speculate and think about how we were in that point of playing.
Anyways, try Big Eyed Fish or I'll Back You Up.

sure you can give advice but the way you came accross was that it's some impossible task to play stay...
Also, if someone played stream for 2 months non stop, they would get it.
I've heard alot of people play it.
I sure as hell can't, but if I really wanted to I would.
It kinda grinds me when people say, dont play this song, you're not good enough yet...............you don't know that.
Daves guitar playing is awesome but by no means is it something that is flabbergasting and stay is no exception to that.
So I dont know what you're saying.. or just saying.

yes but taking two months to learn a song isn't exactly the best way to progress as a guitaristTrippin Hillbilly wrote:Ranting Thespian wrote:I can still give advice, though. On that logic, you can't tell people that they can play Sream in 2 months of playing. Just saying.

i definately would not say that. over the course of those two months that one is learning that song, they can master slides/hammerons/pulloffs or whatever. they can experiment with it. they can learn fills and whatnot to make the song their own. you learn so much without even knowing you are.fatjack wrote: yes but taking two months to learn a song isn't exactly the best way to progress as a guitarist

where are they learning these fills, certainly they aren't thinking of them by themselves if they've only played for two months.dmbguitar718 wrote:i definately would not say that. over the course of those two months that one is learning that song, they can master slides/hammerons/pulloffs or whatever. they can experiment with it. they can learn fills and whatnot to make the song their own. you learn so much without even knowing you are.fatjack wrote: yes but taking two months to learn a song isn't exactly the best way to progress as a guitarist
they may be mastering all those dynamics you mentioned, but only the dynamics for that song. learning a song that is WAY too far above your skill level only helps you learn that song not much else, the trick is learning songs that above your skill level, but dont take you two months to learn
