Tripping Billies wrong? (Now with Video)

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Tripping Billies wrong? (Now with Video)

Unread post by subotai » Sat Oct 18, 2003 12:17 am

I was watching the 5-6-96 video and it shows dave playing it differently from the site I believe.

The site shows this for the first part of the verse:
E:--------------------------------
B:---------------------------------
G:----6--4/--0----7------4/5-------
D:----2--2---0----7-------------9--
A:--------------3/5-------------9--
E:-5------------------8~~~~~--5/7--
3 (2) (1) 4 (1) (1)

The way I have always played it and the way it looks like Dave is playing it is:

E:-------------------------------------
B:-------------------------------------
G:----6--4/--0----7-------5\4/5-------
D:----2--2---0----7-----------------9--
A:---------------2/5-----7-----------9--
E:-5------------------8~~~~~---2/7-

From what I can tell, there isn't a slide 5/4\5. That is just Dave carrying his finger up the fretboard to the 4th fret to slide down to the 5th. Just watch the story tellers version. There is a spot where that is shown perfectly. Also, the slide that goes into the B5 (799) is played from about the 3rd fret. And the 7 that is played after the 8 on the low E I don't hear at all, so I duno what to say on that. Hope this helps

I have to say, from playing this song for quite some time, and watching numerous videos, this site's tab is 100% right.

Hmm in the 96 video you can cleary he him do the 545 slide though ..... Ilso he is definetly planting his finger on the 7th fretr after he hits the note on the 8th.

Keep in mind that Dave mixes up how he plays his songs quite often. Perhaps he played it that one time that way (either by accident, or just wanted to try something new), but the way the site has it is the way dave plays it most of the time.

Maybe he messed up or the guitar was tuned down in some weird way and thats how he ended up playing it?

he does slide from the 3 down to the 7 in Crashing the Quarter, but in storytellers he slides from the 5....so they are both correct...

He plays the verse the same way multiple times in the video so its not him messing up. Also I think you can see him do the 5/4/5 slide in Storytellers.
I will try to find a mpeg editor and upload it.

i thought he might have done the 5/4\5 the first time in that video but to me it looks like the next 2 times he's just bringing his hand back down for the next upslide, i dont hear it

You must be thinking of a different part of the verse. He is CLEARY going from 5/4\5 on the video. Go frame by frame if you have to. Anyway the 3/7 part looks more like 2/7.

ok....getting technical then...look real close at exactly 1:43 of the song...there's no way his index finger is on the 3rd string for the first "5" in "5/4\5"....like you claim...it's just waving above the strings man...it doest fit at all with the song...maybe you should post a clip so I can see what it's supposed to sound like because to me it doesnt look like it goes at all...it's just a simple slide from the 4 to 5th fret.

If you actually listen to it you can hear it's 4/5 not 5/4/5....screw the video
