Tim Reynolds - Live in Chicago

Unread post by Thomas » Wed Mar 08, 2006 11:03 am

ok, i might get some bad remarks for this but i just had to ask.

Is it just me, or did tim sound horrible in the live from chicago cd?

maybe it's because the quality of the video i saw wasn't that great, (i'll have to go home and listen to the actual cs again) but at some points i thought it was just god awful.

ESPECIALLY compared to warran haynes at central park...

He frequently goes overboard with his effects, like on jimi thing and watchtower. His tone is horrible on jimi.

Yeah I dont know that his tone is horrible as much as he just wasnt on the same page as the band on those two songs, however I dont think i have ever seen him play better than on Lie in our graves from live in chicago, that solo is incredible.
Do I listen to pop music because I'm miserable or am I miserable because I listen to pop music?

nah man, , tim's playing was great all around, watchtower was really dissonant and crazy, but i like that.

The thing is, carter didnt follow tims solos in Jimi and LIOG very well, the way he raises the tension for Leroi and Boyd solos he just didn't do with timmy, so while timmy brought it up, carter stayed with a constant backing beat... thats all it was.

However, i think in Any One Seen The Bridge he is unreal,
i love all throughout that Cd without a doubt

it was great on lie in our graves.

but i think when you get that good, you get board with normal greatness and want odd sounding greatness

Wow I cannot believe these comments. In MY OPINION, I think Tim Reynolds is easily one of the best guitarists alive.

His vibrato, his phrasing, his tone, his picking, his compositions all are subpar to me. He picks so hard on acoustic that it sounds like shit. His electric solos (That I've heard from DMB live releases) are always composed of pre-bend licks, which he overuses like crazy, and then poorly executed shred runs which don't fit in the cotext of the song.

I would say, just to compare DMB guests, that Warren Haynes is a guitarist that is, IMO, much better than Tim.

I agree that Tim overuses bending stuff and effects with the electric guitar. However, I don't understand why you say "he picks so hard on acoustic that it sounds like shit". I know he uses a thick pick, so that can happen but... well, I don't see any of those issues on L@LC. :)
