Is this guitar worth it?

Unread post by Thomas » Fri Mar 03, 2006 1:56 pm

I'm looking to get myself an electric guitar pretty soon. I am more than capable with an acoustic guitar but the world of electrics is foreign to me. I was thinking just a basic fender strat to start out with but this one caught my eye

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product?sku=517894

what caught my eye was purely cosmetic so I wanted to get the advise from someone who knows what they are talking about.

this guitar is a little above my price range, because I still have to get a small amp, but i could stretch it this far.

A good amp will do more for you then a good guitar, if I where you I would look into getting a good amp and a decent guitar.

Hey guys, thanks for all of the quick replies. I posted this question on another forum also and I’m getting a lot of the same answers, that this a decent guitar but you should mostly be concerned with getting a decent guitar and a good amp.

I wasn’t planning on spending a whole lot on an amp but I was looking at this one

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/ ... sku=483188

they have this at the local guitar store and I really like it because it has the effects built in so I can experiment with them without having to go out and buy them all. This is strictly for playing at home and learning, I can borrow a bigger amp from a friend if I ever get a chance to play on stage.

Now back to the guitar, I am not above buying a used guitar but I would like to know what to look for before I did.

and I really don't have a specific type of music that I will be playing, I can imagine that i would start off with everything over at jmtabs.com though.

Epi Les Paul. Great first electric, and easiest way to transition from acoustic to electric playing.

Depends on the sound you want. Fenders tend to sound more country western and twangy to me, while hollowbody guitars are very warm sounding and have a lot of sustain. They also have a lot more feedback though. Also, I would pass on a mexican strat and start looking at G&L ASAT guitars. They are made by Leo Fender after he left fender and in my experience they are usually a little higher quality and have better pickups than an off the shelf fender. Go around and play some, and spend the extra money on an amp and maybe some pedals. Dont get an amp with effects built in. That is fun in your room, but thats all its good for. Look for Power and good sound!

Good Luck
Do I listen to pop music because I'm miserable or am I miserable because I listen to pop music?

I agree with the G&L statement, but that may be a bit out of your pricerange. G&L has another line called Tribute that puts out cheaper version of their guitars.

Personally I love fenders, but you have to know what you're buying. I don't recoomend getting a Made In Mexico unless you play it at the store a TON before you buy it and you're sure that you want that guitar.

If I were you, I would go to a guitar store and play every electric that you want. Above your price range, below, whatever just play it. That way you can get a feel for what you want. Also, try to play out of that amp that you're looking at so you can get a good feel for what the guitar/amp combo is gonna sound like when you get home.

For $500, get a Epiphone Les Paul Classic Plus Guitar and a better amp. That guitar is not worth it. I would assume it is so much because it is 60th anniversary, not good quality.
