Improving a really, really bad guitar?

Unread post by heliker » Wed Oct 15, 2003 2:22 pm

So I decided taking my nice guitar camping and to the beach is a bad idea. Bonfire smoke simply can't be good for the finish, among other things. So I went on eBay and bought a guitar, with gig bag, tuner, 2 sets of strings and a couple picks, for $1. Plus a little shipping, but the whole thing comes out to about $25. Wow. It'll probably sound like a $1 guitar when it gets here, but what the hell? For that price it'll be fun to paint or decorate or something if never play.

So it came, and yes, it sounds like a $1 guitar. I've messed around with it a little, lowered the action, altered tuning up an octave and back, but still just playing it seems to take it out of tune. So my question: is there anything I can do to it to make it sound a little, tiny bit better? At this point I don't care much about tone or volume, I just want it to stay in tune.

Or should I just make art out of it instead of with it?

Thanks

bh

i like the idea of having a 'crap' instrument for beach trips and stuff. thats what i'm gonna do with my 200 buck ibanez, once i buy a new bass. just keep it for thrashing around. :D

my friend took his squier (first guitar) and changed out:

wiring
tuning machines
neck
pickups (mmm EMG kirk hammett pickups)
bridge

and pretty much anything else but the body.

now its sweet

Has anyone ever used the D'addario strings that Dave uses... do they sound good?
