I'm actually talking from experience, there was a rapper in my music theory class last semester who had absolutely no knowledge of music besides the beats that he made and looped on his computer. In a single class period, I explained to him the 12 notes, their position on a piano, the grand staff, bass and treble clef, sharps and flats, etc...by the end of the class, he was playing [simple] songs written in standard notation with both hands.

That's very rare. I think that guy is an exception.

No, I'm sure you're not.

And him sightreading piano sheet music using both hands its very exceptional. Ive been playing/messing around with piano for around 4 years now. I still have trouble sightreading. Not that Im saying Im the case for everyone, but from what I've seen with the people I've met....I've found Im your average muscian when it comes to keyboard instruments.

Uh, I'm pretty sure that it doesn't take the average musican 4 *years* to learn to sightread on piano. Now, there are pieces that my sister (a concert pianist) has studied that I strongly doubt anyone mortal could just sit down and sightread with few mistakes. There are great musicians, and then there are prodigies.

I don't understand all this drum tab backlash when a lot of people use guitar/bass tabs shamelessly.

I think it's great that he's at least trying to contribute.
