storytellers he just said he took way too much acid (was it south africa? do they have acid there?) and the song was written abpout that.
as for the two words, tripping (this is obviously a reference to tripping on acid) and billies (not so sure, I know a popular term for heavy hallucinations is "Tripping Balls", so maybe this was just a slang term refering to taking way too much acid as dave said he did.

i guessed it was like when people go goat tipping and you know they jump up really suddenly and the goat freezes up and you tip them over. i thought thats what it was and it was just like having fun whenever you can type of idea...apparently im completely wrong.

gotcha...but was there a cliff+falling story? I remember hearing it on a weekly davespeak a while back, at least I think so.Machtimus wrote:The lyrics are about an acid trip he took. But the title is derived from the point in the above post.b_fost wrote:I think dave fell off a cliff or something when he was tripping with friends on a beach. I might be 100% wrong on that though.

Tripping Billies], its name inspired by a girlfriend who said it sounded like "hillbillies on acid," was first heard on the group's self-released live debut, Remember Two Things, but lost nothing in studio translation. "Boyd would start sawing away on his violin, and we were screaming and dancing and clapping around behind him," Matthews says of the new version. "When I hear that solo, it holds a big memory for me."
- Crash Guitar/Vocal/Tablature Book.
"There's a lot of different references in that song. Puff the Magic Dragon, remember Puff the Magic Dragon? And they got in trouble because they thought it was about smoking pot? So I took that avenue with the dragon we were smoking and all that in that song."
- VH1 Storytellers
"Tripping Billies, I don't know what it's about. Life is short, you know, that sort of thing. Seize the day. Don't waste your time. Why worry? That sort of stuff. I guess the temporariness of us. So that's what the song is about. So celebrate while you have the chance to. Live. That's what it's about."

storytellers the whole version, he explains the meaning of the song, he talks about how kodak should create acid trips that are 10 seconds, etc.Lbacker wrote:yah that story sounds familiar from somewhere too...Kukini wrote:Billie is also a slang term for 'cop' in South Africa. I heard some where that he was on a beach in SA naked and a cop came up and he was on acid, blah blah blah.
