There's a certain poetics to the way Dave makes his sexual references. He leaves them very open-ended to the point where they could be interpreted any number of ways. That's one of the beauties of his song writing abilities.

While you could interpret "lovely lady, can i drink you please? i won't spill a drop, oh i promise you" as cunnilingus, there's no explicit lyric or line that establishes that as the meaning. I think you can go back to Shakespeare (Romeo and Juliet maybe?) where drinking of another person poetically refers to a simple kiss. Again, that's just another interpretation. Shakespeare had his fair share of sexual references as well.

The point being, there's a fine line between Dave's metaphors that could be interpreted as bodily fluids (if you so desire) and the blunt expression of "i cum too much".

Even in the aforemention Crash Into Me with the "I come into you" line - interpreting that as the very literally fluid exchange is like inferring that Dave is homosexual on the basis of So Much To Say's "I say my hell is this closet I'm stuck inside". Don't laugh, I've had people bring this to my attention.

They've all been slapped for stupidity and short-sightedness.

Sorry, that got a little involved but Dave goes through some serious hoops to give his songs a certain depth and we shouldn't try to shallow them out. Open interpretation is a wonderful thing.

i've also heard people comment to the So Much To Say "closet" lyric. i seriously doubt he's gay. i've seen him on the Ave near the UW with his wife ashley. he's not gay. lol

I think there's an old article floating around where he talks about how if his music had fallen through the only thing else he would be good at is masturbation. And I thought I was a little perv. Getting nasty is fine, I just don't like it to be blunt in music. Not because I think its offensive but because I like to be suggestive, you know, make people figure it out. The brain IS the biggest erogenous zone. Make it subtle and crack the evil grin...

back to Too Much: i still think some of you are failing to see the point. obviously it's of little, if any, consequence whether you liked it or not....rather subjective. my thinking was that Too Much is certainly one of dave's edgier, more vulgar tunes. the lyrics are harsh and egocentric. and by the way, i've heard live versions (D&T) where he says "fuck it up, lick it up". so this is clearly a song in which dave was Not trying to be romantically poetic. quite the opposite, his lyrics were direct and terse, almost hostile. my changes were simply more explicit.... and i was fuckered up when i did it, while hangin with some chics (whom, by the way, liked it and laughed their asses off)

in my own writing, my lyrics are almost always subtle, romantic, profound, and thought-provoking (at least that's the feedback i've received from those i've played for).

so by taking a cynical position on my rendition is really being obtuse or argumentative, and surely not the point. so congrats on missing it.

and by the way, FATJACK, prior to this i've never directed a comment at anything you've said, negative or otherwise. You, on the other hand, have made many critical and negative comments on posts i've made. so, to me it seems that your intent is to be a prick, instead of fairly evaluating the merits of my comments. definitely not cool.
