recentley ive been browsing ebay and i keep finding the chet atkins SST goin for around $250. some of these seem to have slight blemishes...but that doesnt bother me at all. seeing how i know very little about buying these guitars.. would this be a good deal? im not sure how serious i am since i just got a taylor at christmas... its more out of curiosity

If you're really interested in this type of guitar, i would recommend bidding on it. I purchased the gibson chet a long time ago, and when i compare the two I wish I had just spent a fraction of the money on an epi. THe gIbson definitely has a more polished look with the nicer volume control, etc. But I think the epi is still pretty decent for the money.

im still gonna take my time.. i see them up for auction all the time, and im gonna check out a guitar shop near my house and try and play one soon. my other question is, since this will be the first electric anything i own, should i get an acoustic amp for the epi chet, or just a regular electric??

i had a gibson sst for some time and i loved it...really good presence and balance...not really a true acoustic tone, but it is real handy for recording and even moreso when you are playing out live...cuts right through a drummer with a dry feed to a PA, very versitile...i wouldn't use it for playing electric - it will work somewhat, but it isn't a true electric tone either...kinda covers all of the bases and is very very practical...as per amp choice, it works fine in both (really depends on what sound you are looking for) - i mean it is able to work with both, but i am telling you, running a line straight into a PA or mixer is really effective

better woods, better pickups, better tone control. the gibson is very crisp, and the epi is more... flat isnt the right term....but you know, its not as bright and cutting as the gibson... i remember there used to be a place where you could always find some chets, and other guitars, i know someone here got one for like $500, the older model, but i couldnt find the site, anyone wanna hook me up?K.Smith wrote:What are the main differences between the Epiphone Model and the Gibson Model?

And like he said, the Gibson is a much cleaner tone. It has alot more character (better bass, clarity, response) than the Epiphone. If you can find a USED Gibson for a decent price go ahead, if not go with the Epiphone. If you need anything else, send me a PM.

I thought so, but the guitar's pickup was giving out uneven tone. I knew I wanted to replace the pickups anyway, so I sent out it to Fishman to get the 'Dave' treatment; it sounds unbelievable now. I also ended up getting a little refinishing done to it too, so it looks brand new too. So the guitar ended up costing me $800ish, which is still a good deal especially a older model SSTSciaracastro wrote:

Changing out the original pickups/saddle with Fishman's products but also having the new pickup be modified to work with the existing controls (volume, treble, bass)Sciaracastro wrote:still a fucking great deal!
