just tune your low E string an octave lower than the D string...
or just use this guitar tuner.

When you have your guitar in standard tuning, holding the fifth fret on the low e string will sound just like and open a string. Now, tune your low e string down about a half a turn and put your finger on the seventh fret, it should sound exactly like an open a string, if it doesnt keep making minor adjustments on the low e until the 7th fret on it sounds just like an open a. Does that make sense, I dont know how else ot explain it, or just buy/use a tuner like isaac said.

its an octave lower from the fourth string, not an octave lower from the sixth stringKevinGTArch wrote:Isaac, forgive my correction, but drop D isn't a WHOLE octave below the D-string is it? I thought you just tuned it down a step exactly to the D-string...at least that's what I've seen and always done.
I don't even think the string tension at an octave lower would be playable.

Yeah, I do know that Eb is half a step down from E and D is a whole step down from E. I do know that much.
But I wasn't aware that there was an octave difference between the 4-string D and the dropped-D. How does that work out?
Seriously, I'm not an expert in music theory, but I just don't hear the octave between the two. If you can explain it, I'm all ears.
