Drum Tabs?
Drum Tabs?
Hi everyone,
You may have noticed I'm new here (only registered 10 mins ago). I love DMB, and am a drummer, so I worship Carter. I've tabbed a couple of songs for drums, and I put 'em up over at MxTabs a while ago... but as you may know MxTabs was shut down recently due to legal threats - apparently lyrics/tabs are now illegal, but that's another story.
My question is about the site. Even though I've only been here a couple of times, it seems to have incredible promise - a nice design, and a specific focus on DMB, meaning accurate tabs/info.
My question is what's the reason behind this site not having drum tabs? After all, it is called DMBTabs, and I did find it as a result of looking for drum tabs. Obviously the focus of the site is Dave and his guitar, but would it be possible to put a little 'Drum Tabs' link somewhere that takes you to some page for drum tabs? As far as I know (I'm no programmer) it shouldn't be too much effort, and not much time would even have to be devoted to it. Maybe there's bandwidth issues, maybe you could argue this site is not for drum tabs, maybe you don't think note-perfect drumming is important, maybe it's something else entirely.
The reason I ask is that I'm looking for a place with accurate drum tabs, and this looks like the kind of site/community that could make that happen. I've already got a couple of tabs and could whip up more if I had reason to - I'd be happy to contribute as much as I could.
Finally, my apology paragraph. I only just registered, so I have no way of knowing what's happened to this site in its lifetime. This may have been an issue that was debated and decided that it was unnecessary, or the owner may just not want it. I did search for stuff, but nothing turned up. Sorry if this was a waste of a thread.

Hey this is a pretty good suggestion but I'd say that the reason there are no drum tabs are because Kanter(site creator) makes his tabs after watching videos of it being played and it would be next to impossible to do that with the way Carter plays. Also, I dont think too many drummers hang around this site and the ones that do most likely play by ear anyway.

dmbtabs, welcome to it.
I think the lack of drum tabs (didn't know there was such a thing) is due to the same reason behind the lack of violin tabs, bass tabs (though there are a few), and sax tabs (
)....kanter plays guitar, therefore this is a guitar oriented site.

ya like they said its not as known, and everything goes through kanter for accuracy testing, ive never found drum tabs that helpful anyways, especially if i wanted to try a carter thing. my suggesting would be go to other instruments and post what you have, if you notice there's very little bass tabs on the main site, but in the forum in other instruments, there's a huge bass tab index.

That's pretty much what I thought. Ultimately it's Kanter's decision (of course).
I can see your point(s) about drum tabs not being that useful, or at least as much as guitar. It's a lot easier to improv when you don't actually have to follow a tune, but they're an invaluable tool for learning a song. Once you know what the drummer actually plays, then you can strike off and play it however you like. It's certainly a lot quicker to learn (and generally sounds better) than listening by ear and playing something similar
Posting in 'other instruments' brings up another point. If there is a bunch of bass tabs, why not give them a little spot on the main site too? It'd hardly require much maintenance, I'm sure you could find someone to check them for accuracy - and since everyone would be looking at them, the mistakes could be picked up.
As for having to watch videos, if you're determined enough (and have the right software) you can get most songs down to about 95% accuracy at least. I'm half-way through 'Where Are You Going' at the moment (although saying 'half-way' could be cheating a bit - the drums don't start for about a minute) and it's not an easy song to tab, it's very soft and hard to pick out ghost notes. But slow it down 50%, crank the speakers up and listen real hard (over and over again
) and you can get it.
Anyway, it's just an idea that I couldn't find any evidence of having occured before. I'd be happy to look over any tabs for accuracy, assuming you can trust me
There may not be many drummers around here, but if you could truthfully say the site is a guitar/bass/drum tabs page, you may even attract some. Who knows.

Well then! What an opportunitybtbesong wrote:I believe they were planning on putting in the bass tabs (and all the new guitar tabs) when they release the new version of the website

But seriously, it's a good idea, expanding the site I mean. It's a surefire way to attract more members. An even if there isn't any drum tabs yet (or only a few) just putting a drum tab section in would be the beginning, and it would grow from there - it can't expand if it doesn't exist

And Im aware it might sound biased since there are guitar tabs and bass tabs. But being both a guitarist and drummer (though drummer for much longer), I can honestly say that I think that drum tabs are rather dumb. Of all the things that need tabs, I would think that drums would be the one that was needed least.bassman462 wrote:thats what i wanted to say, but i didnt want to come off as an ass. but ya. agreed.Beauford33 wrote:I personally am against the whole idea of drum tabs. I strongly disagree with this statement. Having (at least) a basic knowledge for music and its structure is an invaluble tool. Drum tabs (or any kind of tabs) are not. They are just a cheat sheet. And it might be "quicker" to learn a song this way, but who to say that is the smartest way.they're an invaluable tool for learning a song. I've read this thread a bunch of times. Would any of you drummers be willing to write out sheet music for any dmb songs?
I like the idea of drum tabs...100%...but I understand a purists thoughts on how it's useless. It can go either way. Bottom line is all drummers read sheet music so I'd be more than willing to throw up some drum sheet music if you guys put that stuff together.
I'm also open to the idea of drum tabs as long as it's known that it's ONLY TO HELP BEGINNERS.
Thoughts on both ideas above?

So maybe they are less necessary than guitar and bass. So maybe they're not 'invaluable'. Maybe I'd better watch my language. But for some people, and please note this doesn't mean everyone, they help. And perhaps if you're a skilled, experienced drummer you can listen to a song and play something that sounds better than what the actual track is. Maybe not. Having a tab does not detract from your "basic knowledge for music and its structure", and really I don't see the harm in a "cheat sheet". And I did not say it was the "smartest way" to learn a song. Just so you know.
In the light of your hatred for less-than-vital tablature, are you actually for or against the idea that is the actual point of this thread? What about bass tabs?
EDIT: Nice to see I have some support. I'd be interested to hear Beauford's position on sheet music of tabs
I'd be happy to turn my tabs into sheet music if anyone knows of a good program.

Aren't both tabs and sheet music basically the same thing? They both tell you how the song's played. Why the big distinction?I'm also open to the idea of drum tabs as long as it's known that it's ONLY TO HELP BEGINNERS.

Sheet music, I have no problem with. Ive seen actual TABS though, and I just laughed. No problem with actual sheet music.pie21 wrote:So maybe they are less necessary than guitar and bass.
