HELP!

I finally signed up as a member of this board - I read it pretty consistently, but have never signed up. I have owned a guitar for about 6 months now and I can play a lot of intro's to songs - so much to say, watchtower, lover lay down, seek up, everyday, etc... - but once I pass that point I am really struggling to learn the stumming patterns - is there anyone that can offer me some advice on how to learn these patters?

There are a number of instruction videos on this site showing different portions of songs, and that may be helpful with the parts you are having diffuclty with. I know in my own experience tablature is not a good way for me to get a feel for how a piece is played. I am sure if you have questions about specific parts of songs, the guys here can help you with them. For me, I just remember to keep it nice and slow, and I don't worry about playing something at speed in the beginning. It is more important to get it down accurately as you develop the muscle memory. Pick one song and work on it steadily rather than picking up three or four and not making much progress with any of them. Again, welcome to the boards, and with some patience I'm sure you will get these songs down.

daves strumming is very looses and hard to follow at first, it will never be a down up up down like other bands, but it should all fit into place. listen to as many solo dave or dave and tim songs/ videos to help as this break the song down to its raw sound. it sounds obvious but just listen really carefully, play along with he cd. i find a softer pick and pivoting the guitar a little neck up also helps.

for very strummy stongs such as twostep or warehouse., tie a tshirt around the bridge of the guitar neck, this will stop any sounds bieng made. then when you strum it will only make a twang. get the rythems by using the guitar like a percussion instrament (with the TEE) then when the sound fits and doesnt sound bad, youll be playing it spot on.

I remember when I was at your stage, and was only interested in learning the part of a song that caught my ear...say, the intro, or solo, etc. Do yourself a favor and learn songs completely. This doesn't necessarily help with musicianship, but it's just a good step.

(I'm not saying that you're doing anything wrong, and I didn't really even answer your question...hope it helped though!)

Forget the T-shirt, just lay your fingers across the fretboard and mute all the strings.
