Totengräber (=Gravedigger)

So, this is my german version of Gravedigger, called Totengräber. I justed wanted to see what a transation of a Dave song would be about and to how it would be to sing it...

Hmm, I didn't put much work into the transation, you hear it sometimes, when the lyrics seem kinda rushed...Sometimes my translation didn't make sense to me, so I changed it here and there. There were also some parts which were beyond my English knowledge... 8)

Have fun and try to sing along with the song! Here are the lyrics:

August Winter 1810 bis 1913
Machte seinen Urgrosskinder klar

haha, that was fucking awesome! i tried singing along but that didn't work...

your voice was great on this one. one of your best vocals yet, and your guitar playing was solid.

i cracked up a bit during "Totengraber" because it's amusing sounding to an asian bloke like me.

there seemed to be some stumbles on the "Ashes to Ashes" portion of the song, mainly with the vocals, and with the Mikey Carson portion there seemed to be too many words which may have caused some stumbles, but some things need to be done for translation.

otherwise? fantastic job. one of my favorite covers, and also one of the most unique. i give you 2 Chopsticks Up.

I didn't listen, but that's not a bad translation. (I love German).

Nice job reworking it, and largely capturing the essence of the song. :)

pretty kick ass man. i hate listening to stuff that i don't know what they're saying cause im paranoid and i always think they are saying stuff like down w/ america and i'm going to kill appfro....but i actually was able to stay w/ that for a little while. 2 questions...

1. how do you get August Winter from Cyrus Jones??? just out of curiosity, im not sure how translation works, i only took spanish for a year :D

2. i noticed you said 1940 - 1990 in english??? is that because they are too long in german or do they really sound the same?

awesome stuff dude, i wish i were multi-lingual.

Hah. He just substituted German names for the English ones.
2. i noticed you said 1940 - 1990 in english??? is that because they are too long in german or do they really sound the same?
They don't sound the same. But in German, instead of saying Nineteen Forty (Neunzehn Vierzig), one would say Nineteen hundred 40 (Neunzehn Hundert Vierzig). I imagine he said them in english for practical / syllabic reasons.

1. I changed all the names, because I would sound kinda weird having these English names in a german song. So Cyrus Jones can not directly translated into german, at least I don't know the german version of it. the same with m. stonewall, changed it into Rita Steinberg, a jewish name, she lost both of her sons during WWII, because they got killed by the Nazis (in my song). the 3rd name Michi Karsten: Michi is a german short form of Michael and Karsten is a widespread name here. So I think the main reason why I changed them is because, it fits better into the whole song.

2. No I said it in german, spelled: Neunzehnvierzig zu Neunzehnneunzig.
Sounds close to the english numbers but the difference is there.
1990 zu 1992 would have been to long for the verse. I would have had to rush even more with the words... 8)

Thanx for your review and don't worry if somebody says something in a language you don't understand. Nobody's gonna say bad things to you or stuff like.
The reason why I sometimes write swiss-german with Leibundgut17 is that it's like a PM for us...and of course we're teasin you a bit because we know you'd like to know what we're talkin bout ...

Peace, Bo.

No, the way I said it is right. it's german but it's not like you would use it in class or something. It's more like a familiar (slang?) way to say it. Like you say: "I'm not gonna do that" instead of "I am not going to do that". People say things shorter to save time not only in English.

That was incredibly cool. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to that...its nice to hear a familiar song with a totally different twist to it. Great job on the vocals...your voice was right on.

First off, that was awesome to hear, great job. Incredibly unique to hear, thanks so much for doing that. Now for at least a month, every time I hear Gravedigger I will sing in my head Totengraber...

However, it sounds like your guitar is out of tune, either the G or B string.
