Original "I Know"

Unread post by mattinbeloit » Sun Jan 29, 2006 2:40 am

I just finished this up with a friend that plays violin and I am really happy with how this turned out. I wrote "I Know" a little over a year ago and have posted many versions of it on here for you guys, but this one is differnt. This is the first thing I have really gone all out on and is the first thing that could probably pass for professional quality so I am very happy. Enjoy and let me know what you think, just a simple love song. I just got back from the studio, it's 2 in the morning and raining outside and I need a White Castle burger from the fridge, what a day.

Sounds good to me. I loved the violin. The two insturments together sounded awesome. The only thing I had a little trouble with was making out a couple words. OTher than that, it was a awesome effort!

Wow, I absolutely love the interplay between the guitar and the violin. That is a fantastic combination! Also the quality of the recording is some of the best i have heard on the boards. Did I read that right that you did this in a studio? Anyway, its sounds great, the mix between the guitar and violin is perfect, dont change a thing. The vocals were good too bud some parts were clearer and louder than others. If you have access to a compressor thats what you need, it will even out the signal, boost the soft, tone down the loud. I also think adding a few vocal harmonies would put this over the edge (in a good way). If there is anyway you could dig down and really bust out some loud soulful singing that would be great. I know its a quiet song but I think it would sound great with at least one vocal part that you really belted. You sound like you have a good voice, try it!

Great Job overall

Was that the taylor or the martin? My bet is on the Martin, but im not sure...
Do I listen to pop music because I'm miserable or am I miserable because I listen to pop music?

The intro changing to the chord part was a little disjointed to me, but I love the rest of it.

Very good voice. I agree with Buffalo, you should belt it at some point, you've got what it takes.

Great job!

Thanks. ya i did this in a "studio". I'm the TA for the Recording Classes here at college so I have access to the studio that the prof has put together. He started out here 20 years ago as one of the music teachers and tried to get the school to fund him to start a studio and the school never took much interest in it saying it would be a waste of time and money. Over the past 20 years he has probably collected close to $100,000 worth of equpiment and some space the school gave him to put a studio in. We work with the space but it's not the best. The school seems to think that we will never be capable of putting out professional quality stuff (This school is not aimed at music at all so it's hard getting their attention...) so I have started working my ass off to try to change this. We submited this song to them to show them what it can do now and all of a sudden they seem to want to help fund our studio endevor (Funny how that works, you do something really well and they want a peice of it, in other words they want their name all over our shit, but if it gets us a better studio I for one can kiss some ass :)..) but they seem to be having a change of ideals latley. Sadley with the computer that we run protools on in there this is about the extent of what we can do and keep the quality as it is. When i was done editing this I had over 10 tracks with all the reverb stuff and filters and EQ's and the old MAC G4 just can't do much more then that, so hopfully the school will fund us to get a new G5, they already gave us $1200 yesterday so we could buy some isolation boothes. We shall see, just so you know the setup was basically a digirack 002 running protols on the mac. I used the Martin (records well) and recorded it with a neumann KM184. My voice I used a rode NTK tube mic, and the violin a Royer Ribon mic, so needless to say I used the best mics you could. Ian (the prof) has a kick ass selection of mics.
