I've sold my soul and now i need help

Unread post by Appfro » Thu Feb 02, 2006 2:28 pm

So, i'm getting into a band unit in the army where i get to play top 40 music. i know i know, like i said, i sold my soul. but at least i get to hang out w/ some good musicians even if i have to play shitty music.

anyway, a lot of the things we're playing revolve around hip hop and some actual rap. GOOD rap nowadays is no longer a keyboard w/ a beat machine, it's actual instruments and decent musicians. while i don't like all of the music i'm playing, i do need to learn how to play it.

so my question is, what are some of the common effects used on the guitar for hip hop or rap music. i imagine they use a lot of reverb and maybe a wah pedal, but i'm wondering what else they put on it. anyone familiar?

i'm assuming almost all of the effects are put on via computer. And it all depends what song, there's no generic hip hop effect for guitar that i know of. listen to Justin Timberlake 'like i love you' (i think thats the song)
then NERD 'rock star'
then listen to the mayer / kanye track
then listen to that trick daddy song samplng ozzy. all very different.

I have no idea, i dont listen to that crap. I just heard him playing in the studio on some snippet. but a lot of hip hop has clean jazzy guitar, some has almost metal distortion, some has acoustic, soem has traditional rock distorted, some has whatever, very broad range it deals with.

let's get it started - black eyed peas
Loose yourself - em
get this party started - pink
since you've been gone - kelly clarkson
In the end - linkin park

use chords that are on your thin strings. learn high swishy voicings for up there,
most of the time a good clean sound with work, but a wah is VERY useful. A little distortion wont hurt.

Eric Krasno from soulive has a thing that sounds like a turntable and uses it on You MIght Die Trying live, and Two Step...
i have NO idea how he does it. AT ALL..

oh, and you didnt sell your soul! musicianship is musicianship, and theres nothing wrong with FUN music, even if its not deep or amazingly musical.
You'll have fun, then you'll go to the next step, have fun

Yeah, I don't like them either, but they're a hip-hop band that actually play their instruments.
