using acoustic strings on electric

Unread post by acusticdude » Tue Jan 24, 2006 5:56 pm

Will it work? I feel like playing my electric but I don't have any strings and don't feel like going out to the store. I have a pack of martin sp's. I thought I would ask y'all before I trashed a perfectly good set of strings. I am putting them on a full size archtop with humbuckers.

electric strings are lighter gauge...this *could* be damaging to your guitar. Not sure, but still...I wouldn't risk it.

I imagine it would be less likely to hurt something like an archtop, since it's probably at least a semi-hollowbody with acoustic properties.

That's not to say I'd do it though, but I am less than adventurous with things of this sort.

Sort of on topic i just put some electric strings on this old ass classical guitar i have and it sound ten times better than it did before. I pack this guitar in my car for long traffic stops and road construction, you never know when you might want to bust out two step or some other song. I don't think it was good for the guitar but in the condition its in it doesn't really matter to me.

It will work, you will notice it does dull the sound of the electric a little bit, no big deal though

Don't do it unless you want to risk serious damage to your guitar. I don't care what anyone says about they did it and it didn't hurt it. Your electric is not designed to take that sort of tension and you will run into problems in the future as a result of putting them on. They might not show up immediately, in fact it might take a sizeable amount of time for problems to show up, but bottom line is don't do it.
