I have no clue. The only thing I can gather is in the chorus, if you take it literaly:

Dave was with a person who said that their love and belief in eachother would be true and last forever. But, something went wrong between the realtionship that shows that the person broke the promise, that in no way would have lasted. So, Dave left, after what was a long relationship that seemed very lonely because of the interaction that eventualy went horrible and fell apart. Now his heart is empty and will last for a long time.

Now, I bet it's not that at all. Although I would guess that Dave and the person are metaphors, like the Man and Boy in Raven. Who knows til someone tells us from the other side of the stage.
