Tim Reynolds Who? (spacey violin sounds)

Unread post by RunsWithBuffalo » Sun Jan 15, 2006 3:42 pm

No just kidding, the other night i saw him at the fox theater in Boulder and i got there early to be right up front where i could see his set up and how he used it. Mainly i wanted to see exactly how he made the spacey violin sound. I knew it had something to do with his delay pedals and volume pedals. Turns out all he does is pick a note with the volume at 0 and then raises the volume and the delay pedal does all the rest. Fuckin sweet! So i went and got an Ernie ball JRVP for $69 and i already had a dd-3. It is awesome, so fun to play with, I cant recommend it enough.

Here's a sample of what you can do with this (mind you I have had it for a day so i don't yet know all that it can do)

Oh and I have been listening to a lot of sigur ros lately

This is cool. Really does remind me of Sigur Ros, which is a very good thing.

also you should check out an Ebow. its like 40 bucks i think, but it makes some crazy sounds. basically it makes your strings vibrate without picking them. howie day uses it for when he plays loops, etc.

Yeah i was debating between this and the ebow, but i think with a little practice i can get the same sound and still be able to do other things as well. Ive seen ebows for about $80.

Gumbo, my dd-3 was set as follows: Effect level at 12 oclock, feedback at 1, delay at 2, and the mode at 800ms. I also used my dl-4 set up very similiarly. I dont know if i would send back the dd-6, thats a hell of a pedal and it definitely could do what my dd-3 was and more.

Does that answer your question? Like i said, the delay pedal won't do this on its own, you need a volume pedal as well, it smoothes out the note to make it sound like strings instead of a plucked note. This is done by picking the note with the volume all the way down and then gradually increasing the volume, the delay gives it sustain.

If you don't have a volume pedal, or the cash to go out and buy one, if you are playing an electric you can play a note with your volume knob on 0, and then turn the volume knob up for a similar effect. You can't go as fast with this, but I have seen Tim actually use this technique while playing his Tele on the Chaos View DVD. He plays notes with his thumb and uses his pinky to turn the knob. Now that I think of it, he actually does it pretty fast too!

The delay gives it much more sustain. I think you would need it because the sound will go away as soon as you turn the volume down. With the delay, you can play a note, and then play another while the other is still going. To me, that is what makes the effect cool.

I think musicians friend has a delay pedal for 19.99 if you want something to experiment with. To be honest, I would just look on ebay for a used boss, they are work horses, very hard to break and they are very reliable. I picked up my dd-3 for $45. it was scratched but it still works great.

That was very cool! :D

Your track has a sort of meditation/trance-genre feel to it.

Very relaxing. :)

Thanks for the file.
