Unread post by proudestmonkey41 » Thu Jan 12, 2006 2:40 pm

it was recommended to me in another thread to read the complete idiots guide to music theory (by b_fost i believe?).. so i was at the book store today..that title wasnt there.. but i did find the complete idiots guide to guitar.. to songwriting.. and to singing... as well as singing for dummies, songwriting for dummies and guitar for dummies.. just wondering if anyone has read any of these books and has any opinions on them?

Yeah, I was one of the people who recommended that book to you.

I'm not familiar with those specific titles, but in general, the Idiot's Guide and For Dummies series are very informative, very easy to read, and very fun/entertaining. If those are topics that you are interested in, you have nothing to lose, and I almost guarantee that you would learn a great deal.

Sorry I couldn't give a specific opinion, but I hope that helps. Also, go to amazon.com, and type those titles in, and read the user reviews. Those are usually a good indicator of whether or not a book is worth buying.

I bought that book and have never really used it. I started going through but found better books. As the title says, it really is for the person who is starting from scratch and has really no prior knowledge of the instrument. This is a good book for the complete beginner but I would not recommend it for anyone who has been playing for any period over 3 months(assuming good amount of hours played).

I don't have them at work(obviously) but I can look up some of the books I used to learn and give you recommendations if that is what you are looking for?

I would also say guitarnoise is a better source for improving your musicianship.

awesome.. i'll take a look at guitarnoise for sure.. the main reason is im planning on taking lessons in the summer and would like to know as much theory as i can pick up on my own before hand... more or less to get things moving quickly... i had to do music theory in elementary school from grades 1-8.. but from that point on all i can remember is how to play hot crossed buns on the recorder. so i like the idea of the idiots guide cause from what i hear its very easy to read/ learn. is guitarnoise good for a begginner?

I bought the idiot's guide to music theory and I find it to be a great resource. I disagree that if you have been playing for more than 3 months you won't get a lot out of it. I have been playing for a few years pretty solidly, and music theory is one of those realms that you can never stop learning in. The book is not geared towards guitar players, so if you are looking for 'guitar theory' you may try somewhere else.

The book will teach you, among other things, to sight read music which in my opinion is where the real knowledge is at.

I absolutely recommend the book if you are interested in theory.
