If you play a song live but dont have a album ....

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

... can someone take that song and record it? My friend and I used to play a song that was really close to Stay or Leave and one time Dave was at one of our shows. I think he ripped me off man!!!!

Jokes apart, that is a serious issue!
If you don't register your songs and play them live, anyone can legaly steal them. It's shit!!

A high school music teacher started me doing this and now I do it by habit... Write EVERYTHING down. Even if it's just lyrics and chord names (doesn't have to be arranged sheetmusic) and get a witness to sign and date it as well as yourself. Make 2 copies and keep them in seperate places. My parents have one binder and my girlfriend has the other.
Understand what you are playing or you will never understand what to play.

thats what fred durst did when they were trying out new guitarists for the limp bizkit band. he went to music stores around the country for people to try out and on the disclaimer it says that he has the right to take any riff that he likes for use in any of their songs ...i would be hella pissed if i created a sweet song/riff and have that punk ass steal it because he can't be creative and think of his own...this is a reason why i don't listen his whiney punk ass any more.

if you can record something, the file will have a date stamp. so that is one way to go on things.

if you write something, put it in an evelop and label it so you know what it is. mail it to yourself. having the official postage stamp ensures that it is dated and official by the government. then if it is ever an issue, you can sue and have definative evidence the peice of work is yours.

i have done this and my lawyer tells me it is as good as a copyright.

(yeah i have a lawyer, i got into a lot of trouble as a kid and we got to be friends so i figured i keep him around. he got me out of a lot of stupid pranks.)

First off....I honestly doubt Dave knows that you or your song exists. Second off...you can't do anything. As a matter of fact it can be the same exact chords, etc. just as long as its not the same song if you get what I mean.

Subotai, may I remind you, also is the one who started the thread about playing naked in a bathtub with Dave. In other words, my guess is that this is all a joke. ;)

Yep, it is, unless the chords are overly similar to SoL.

I hear that it is also "legally" binding if you send yourself via US Mail in a sealed envelope, a copy of everything you've written!!! (Like if you write the lyrics, chords, and/or record them and put em on tape or CD). The mail posts a date that "can't" be altered. This came from my promoter...he told me this alternative to registring my music since I'm poor and can't afford it at the moment!!!
