im just starting to learn how to play acoustic, with no prior knowledge of how to play guitar. is there really a need for lessons or will i be able to learn fine with info on the internet and plenty of practice in my dorm?

im teaching myself, never had lessons, playing a year. In hind sight I would probobly like to get a couple of lessons to get the right way to hold a pick and posture and stuff. Other than that it all depends on what you want from the guitar, both have their pluses and minuses. I want to just play some dave and other songs, so i just learn them at my own pace. Some weeks ill play 4 hours a day others 2 hours a week. That's why i prefer not having lessons, cause i don't want to "have to learn this before tuesday at 6". But i'm sure you can easily find someone in your dorm that plays and can teach you stuff. and you can find chords and scales to practice on the web. just my two cents

Don't worry about learning songs. Either have someone show you the open chords or buy a chord book with pictures and just work on playing them cleanly and starting to switch in between them. I had a roommate show me all the open chords and show me a barre chord and that kept me occupied for the first five months. then i started to learn dave.

as far as your guitar question: I think the general concensus is that $300 bucks is where good solid top guitars start. I have an Ibanez AW100 I really like it. I would suggest trying to borrow a guitar from someone to make sure you will play and not waste money if you find its not for you. play every guitar in the store in your price range, go with someone who plays and get their input. Cause those guys at guitar center can pretty much make anything sound great. The better your guitar sounds and easier it is to play the more likely you will be to stay motivated.

good luck

Check out this board they have a discussion on guitar around 300 buck right now.
