Do you guys write your own music?

This is the place to talk about guitar playing not done by Dave! Topics about techniques, styles, theory, and other guitarists go here.

Do you guys write your own music?

Unread post by brian_ok » Sun Jan 08, 2006 9:31 pm

In August-October, I wrote several songs+lyrics, that I was proud of at the time. However, I've stopped worrying about originals since then, and have focused on truly studying the guitar and music. I feel it's foolish, as well as pretentious, of me to be writing songs at this point, because I'm a.) 17, and therefore have experienced less than pretty much anyone older than me, and b.)in 5 years, I bet I'll be twice as good as I am now.

Well anyway, do you write originals? What are your feelings about my post? If you do write originals, can you put some of them up in this thread? I just want to hear what you all are up to.

yeah, and sorry for the random/tangent/weird post.

peace, Brian

Yes I write my own lyrics and music. You can check it out on my angelfire site on my signiture.

You are never too young to write songs. The guy who wrote Bohemeon Rapsody (sp?) was only 16 when he wrote it. Paul McCartney wrote his first song when he was a teenager. If you don't start now, even if the lyrics and music suck, then you will never have a future in it. The first ten or so songs I wrote blowed, but eventually I got the hang of it. Now, I am not the best, but I am much better than I used to be.

As for guitar experience. It is good to have. But many artists just play chords. So your music could be very simple and still be amazing. Though I do strongly recommend that you learn more than chords, and study a few artist's styles to develop your own.

Music = expression. There are countless ways to express yourself through music - that is the beauty of creativity. Don't discount your own intuition, I would encourage you to write as often as you feel inspired to do.

im 17 as well and im slowly writing stuff (cause i want to major in art and music as a side thing). i finished like 2 1/2 songs so far that i like, but im kinda scared to share. as a matter of fact, this friday i'm gonna try and play an original that i showed a few people already at an open mic. hopefully it'll go well.

if you want to major in music and do it as a career, i think it'll be alright to write your own stuff. all it really is is practice. you can only get better.

I've recently started seriously writing stuff. I have about... 9 song ideas stuck in my head, but am having trouble materializing them. I've got a lot of riffs and what not, but no lyrics. Melodies yes, lyrics no.

Ever since I started writing, I've been more excited about guitar though.

Well, I have been considering beginning to write music lately, maily because I love music and because I love to write.

In a way, i guess it's because i LOVE to express myself and having people to listen / pay attention to me makes go over the edge.

I'm 18 and a half...I have only 1 year music knowledge...got much guitar to learn yet.

I just hope I can do something.

I understand what you mean, but at the same time I can't help but at LEAST attempt to express myself musically. It's an addiction ya know?

Anyhow, here are some lyrics that I'm rather proud of. This song came together about as perfectly as I could have imagined.

Beast in the Bathhouse

Grab your friend Tina
Cuz you’re going out tonight
Grab your friend Crissy
Careful not to fall on the ice

In twelve hours you’ll be back again
You’ve been awake for so long
Not that it matters
At least you came home

You’ve heard of dozens who’ve died
But that’s alright, because you don’t care
About anything
Or anyone else at all

I’m like that
Is what you said
I’m innocent
It couldn’t happen to me
That’s what you said
But it did

Put the straw to your nose
I hope you fall forward and it goes
Straight through to your brain
And pokes another hole

Inhale, feel it burn
In five minutes you won’t care
You won’t care about anything
Or anyone else at all
Anyone else at all

This chalk outline is straight
Marked by the diamonds in your eyes
Speckled birds fly over your head
Picking the halo apart

Grab your friend the juggler
And journey with him to the land of Oz
Don’t forget your stovetop
Diamonds folds

And we won’t see you again
For another twelve hours or so
While your punding it out
In the bathhouse
