On You Might Die Trying, I do the opposite of cheat, I add notes to the chords to make them sound fuller when I play solo. Same goes for 41 and Gray Street.
After you get to a certain level on guitar you're no longer inclined to cheat, you're inclined on making things sound better - meaning harder to play.

I wouldn't call it cheating either. I would say it is making due with your ability. I have extremely small hands, like a carney, and It is physically impossible for me to make some stretches. My fingers are not going to grow and I hate 3/4 sized guitars, so I make do with what I was born with. Not cheating, just altering

altering...cheating...what i should have said is what are some of the different methods ya'll use on different songs. i would consider using diffferent chords or leaving things out cheating, but i don't consider cheating to be a bad thing. and if people never altered other peoples music, then there would be no progress and there would be no "dave covers".

When I first started playing Tripping Billies
I used my index and middle to navigate around the boards
Now I do it the right way playing with my ring finger on the Low E and my pinky on the G. It makes more sense when you play it, plus it sounds better for some reason. I also used to play Grey Street that way.

I think it is pretty common. I used to do the same thing.
When I play Trippin Billies I play dave's way. When I play Grey Street, Granny chorus, LIOG jam I use my ring finger on the G string and use the middle finger for chords in the same fret then use my pointer finger for chords that are up one fret.

I also don't always play the B5 either. Sometimes I will throw a fill in there or just play the B.

oh and as for cheats.. on #40 i use my thumb on the low e string. instead of my first finger.. because my pinky is to small to reach the low e later on in the song.
