Singing

So you're amazed as to how Dave's rhythm guitar slaps and strums so "perfectly"...but you can't. Ask all things about Dave and his guitars here.

Singing

Unread post by EnFuego » Sun Oct 05, 2003 2:22 pm

I know a lot of people ask questions about singing and playing at the same time...this is not that question. I can play and sing at teh same time, but my voice isnt so good. What can I do to make it better? What can I do to sing on key? Thanks for the help.

figure out a way to sing into a mic and then have it come back to you on headphones, you will be able to hear if you are on key a lot better

record a short part of a song you like to sing and play. Then listen to it and find out if you hit the notes well or not. compare it with the original song if you like. Then try to make it better, try to sing like in the original song, listen to it again and try it again and you'll see that it's actually not that hard if you practise regulary.

Peace, Bo

For those of you who have taken vocal lessons you'll know how important breathing is and how much practice it takes to get it right. Any good book will explain how, the rest is practice.

This is what I did when I started singing years ago. Sit down with your guitar. Starting with the low E string go one note at a time. Strike the note and then using one vowel at at time (A,E,I,O,U), sing the same note you just plucked. Don't practice for more than 15 minutes at a time. In time you will be able to sing the notes in your current range very well and you MIGHT be able to expand your range. And PLEASE sing in your natural voice. I've seen lots of guys at open mic nights make arses of themselves because they're trying to immitate famous singers but these guys sing quite well in their natural voice. I could literaly type out pages and pages of stuff to help you with singing but to be quite honest invest in a couple of classes with a vocal coach. Be up front with them and let them know you only want the basics. They'll give you the foundation and with practice you'll build the house around it.
Understand what you are playing or you will never understand what to play.
