I GOT A MARTIN!!!!

Unread post by mattinbeloit » Sat Dec 31, 2005 10:16 pm

Well, my dad talked me into going down to Atlanta today to the Guitar Center to look at guitars and pedals. I messed around with the D-18GE as usual and drooled over it more and more with every strum. I messed around for another hour or so and we finally left. On the way back home we saw Midtown Music and my dad was like "Oh look that looks like a little music store lets check it out." I go in to what looks like a little hole in the wall music store that regardless of its looks had a great selection. I'm messing with a guitar and my dad's in the corner talking to the owner. The owner goes to the back and pulls out a guitar case and my dad's like "here try this one" and i open up the case to find a sunburst D-18GE and a little note that said "merrry christmas matt". It turns out he ordered it for me and lead me right to it, now i'm really spoiled. I'd say more but it's calling me.

Ya my parents have always supported me in the music area and encouraged me, i'm very fortunate. Most parents say stop wasting time on guitar and get a job, my parents tell me to stop working and play guitar...

Great story!

Quick question though - How would you compare the D-18 GE (Mahagony) to a rosewood guitar? The only mahagony guitar I played was a D-15 and I thought the bass ovetones took over the sound, which pretty much strayed me away from mahagony guitars forever. I've heard real good things about the D-18 GEs; I remember reading something on one of those acoustic guitar forums (AGF or UMGF), that alot of people actually preferred the mahagony sound over the EIR; it was very 'balanced" I believe they put it.

Between those two woods EIR is more known for having strong bass overtones and mahog is more known for it's balance. Each piece of wood is different though so maybe you happened to play one that had too much bass. I wouldn't let one guitar that you didn't care for turn you off to all guitars with a particular wood though.

If you're interested here is an article regarding tonewoods.
