Topics about musical instruments other than guitar should go here. There's bound to be a Carter, LeRoi, or Yo-Yo Ma out there.

What, after reading all this stuff and seeing how different basses are, I really wish I was an accomplished bassist with a nice colection of bass guitars.
THanks for trying to stir the pot

the first thing is just like meddling around so its hard to critique. you seem to stay around the same spot tho. you hit that one note (G#? A?) about 40 thousand times.

the second one also sounds like meddling so its hard to critique. youre like me tho...i cant do the double thumb thing worth a shit.

the third thing is where i can see why you say you feel like youre better with a drummer (and i am the same, i always feel better playing with a whole band, especially a drummer) but again its kinda just meddling its hard to critique. youre missing that note on sinister minister the one that he hits right before the octave...its close to a ghost note but definately noticably missing.

umm yeah theres a difference but im sure a lot of it has to do with the settings. you probably changed your pickups too, is that right?

i like tictacs wrote:Every ric i've played I can't stand, just my opinion. 20 frets doesn't do it for me, they all have high action and it's impossible to get a thick tone out of. I could use them for pickstyle playing but that's about it. Not to mention they are heavy as logs IMO, I just can't stand heavy basses anymore, impossible to play with and be comfortable.

an' another thing...i have such a hard on for moduluses now. i think i have found 'my bass' and i can see why fonz plays them...i can get every tone, from very jaco-ish to booming low end and i can roll off the bass and get a very chris squire-ish pick tone.

and it NEVER goes out of tune.
as opposed to 22 frets? 20 frets really shouldn't limit you all that much.

The action has always been raved about, every bass i've played in a store has had disgustingly high action, i'm sure a ric would somehow have been set up similarly.

A few have said that rics are thin sounding, but everyone else replies with their, to take a phrase from 'wick, "low end growl". I'm sure with 4 knobs and a pickup switch, plus your amp EQ, you could get somewhat of a thick tone.

9 lbs isn't the 6 that my CT will weigh (max, carl's policy 8-) ) but it's not bad and certainly nothing a good strap won't cure.

As for my quantum, i can't play fretless 24/7. and it doesn't have the mwah that a fretless warwick does, or at least i haven't dialed into it yet.

Eh. just my opinion. 22 is my absolute limit, and I have a hard time with that, it's just nice to have more notes up there and a big of a longer fretboard.

meh, whatever floats your boat. i just can't stand them with every bone in my body

Can I give you some advice for solo playing? If you are really trying to write stuff or not I'm not sure. Are oyu just hitting record and playing to come up with ideas?

anyway, if you are trying to write a solo piece, start with a simple melody. I don't know, just maybe something simple. Vic's reminiscience for example...very simple melody, yet beautiful. Write a melody and expand on it as he did, let it ebb and flow and repeat as you will. Right now you've got no melody, just random notes and patterns thrown together which can't really be followed or get any emotion from the listener. You might wnat to start with a fingerstyle melody then as the song gets more intense, throw in some slaps and pops and possibly double thumps if you think you are up to it. Don't be afraid to experiment and even change the tone controls of your bass halfway or whenever through the song. If you start fingerstyle, you may want a very thick bassy tone that comes mostly from the neck pickup. right now its just gritting at my ears, i know a corvette can be alot softer and intimate than what i've heard. Might want to try overdubbing or looping as a fun solo technique as well...loop something simple, like the AB intro, and gradually overdub ontop of it or solo on top of it.

But all in all, i suggest something with a simple melody that can be built upon if youre wanting to get into the solo bass spectrum. It's definatley tricky at first, i think i still suck, but that is what i have learned over time. hopefully i'll record alot of stuff over my break (i've still got a month or so time off before i've got to get back to school- whew)

Any other questions don't hesitate to ask...your technique has definatley improved since i first remember you coming here though. keep it up.

also, have you been learning any theory? just like basic major/minor scales can help alot with this type of stuff, making sure everything sounds good when played together. some basic chordal knowledge is great for writing melodies.
