My Carl Thompson Thread.

Topics about musical instruments other than guitar should go here. There's bound to be a Carter, LeRoi, or Yo-Yo Ma out there.

well..

after extensive reading on TB, i still really want a ric. From what people have said on there, it's a unique sound and that's what i like. The lakland is a lot cheaper, only like six hundred something on MF, but they don't seem all that special to me. The sterling looks cool too, but i can't get past the shitty feeling of every MM stingray i've played at GC. I know lakland's are great basses, but they just don't seem to be anything THAT special. Like, besides custom basses, Rics are some of the most unique instruments you can get, in terms of sound and look. I've read that the feel might take some getting used to, given the pickup position etc, but i'm prepared to deal with that, and i'm sure it's nothing a little practice couldn't get past. The factory quality is nothing but raved about on TB, they say it's some of the most consistently high quality around.

EDIT: and as far as tone and versatility goes, i don't really care. I don't use the freakin 6 knobs on my stupid ibanez at all. I just want a strong funky sound that doesn't need twenty knobs and a compression box and a half hour of amp EQing to be acheived. There are some TBers that have said Rics seem like one trick ponies, but there are plenty that say they are as versatile as any other bass.

I dunno, i'm not doing anything before xmas, to see what my funds are after christmas money comes in, but i still crave the ric over anything i've looked at so far. If i had the money i'd buy one of everything, but obviously i have to go with what appeals to ME most.

an' another thing... i kind of don't WANT a flea. I know they're some of the best, but it's like i'm tired of hearing about them. my quantum has fulfilled my modulus craving, at least for the time being.

forgot you had the quant. im the one with the least amount of basses. but i think id rather have one good bass, then be like this guy i know who buys basses for fun, and all his are low end or mid. his best bass is a fender jazz, and i think its a mex. he also has a epi thunderbird, fender fretless jazz mex., squier p bass, ibanez p-like bass, and thats it. i dont even think he has a somewhat nice amp.

Every ric i've played I can't stand, just my opinion. 20 frets doesn't do it for me, they all have high action and it's impossible to get a thick tone out of. I could use them for pickstyle playing but that's about it. Not to mention they are heavy as logs IMO, I just can't stand heavy basses anymore, impossible to play with and be comfortable.

an' another thing...i have such a hard on for moduluses now. i think i have found 'my bass' and i can see why fonz plays them...i can get every tone, from very jaco-ish to booming low end and i can roll off the bass and get a very chris squire-ish pick tone.

and it NEVER goes out of tune.

bassman, i only have two basses, so im with you as far as having very few. and andrew, you have a freaking quantum why dont you just play that bad mother all day? ill take it if you dont want it. all i play is my warwick corvette and i love it. ive gotten so comfortable with it that it feels great. i love the natural wood finish on the back of the neck as opposed to the glossy stuff on a modulus or fender for example.

but if i had all the money, i would take a fodera monarch butterfly like vic has...that thing is so sweet lookin.

Yeah, the thing is, the glossy necks don't look too fast, but oh boy, it is infintley faster than my thumb, which i am getting rid of. i'm downsizing my collection, january 2 the thumb gets sent out for a flea five and i am getting rid of the brice i've owned for far too long now, so that will just leave me with two fleas and my first bass ever, which i don't think i could ever sell haha.

and bassman, you have to try a flea out, or any modulus or zon or anything with a graphite neck. the low action is unparalelled, so easy to slap and slide around on. they just beg to be played.

What, after reading all this stuff and seeing how different basses are, I really wish I was an accomplished bassist with a nice colection of bass guitars.
