guitars and humidity

I searched and couldn't find anything...so kick me in the balls if I suck.

Anyways, I just bought a pretty nice (read: I have sex with it) Martin, and it's my first good acoustic guitar--I'm a converted electric guitarist. In the past, I have stored my (Ibanez) acoustic in the case, and not worried about humidity. With the Martin, I care a lot more.

1. Is storing it in the case enough protection against dehumidifying?
2. I live in Ohio currently, is this state bad/good as far as humidity goes?
3. What about Oklahoma?
4. Do you recommend a humidifier, if so what kind?

1. no. You should get a humidifer and a reader for your guitar even if u store it in the case.

2. I live in Pennsylvania and this time of year the air gets really dry so I wouldnt see it being much different in Ohio. No matter where you live, even if its the most humid place, the room in which you play guitar could still be dry.

3. Oklahoma i dont know but like i said up there what really matters is the humidity in the room/house where you play guitar. Unless your always playing outside.

4. Yes. Get one of the ones that goes into the soundhole. I got one that u just put in your case and wasnt very effective. Get a humidity level reader too, because too much humidity can be bad just like too much dryness can be bad.

Either way it takes a long time for humidity to affect your guitar actually, I looked up a lot of stuff about it cause recently my guitar has been acting funny and it might be because of lack of humidity in my dorm room here. So get a humidifier and keep an eye on the levels.

I live in Kansas (just north of Oklahoma) and according to my hygrometer the relative humidity in my house right now is 21%.

In the winter I keep all of my acoustics in there case with a soundhole humidifier.

Thanks...have you found that soundhole humidifiers (are those the ones that rest in between the strings) bend the strings out of tune faster? Or is that not something worth worrying about?

just get a dampit. I have two (one for each guitar). works great i think and it's super easy to use them.

I have that it works awesome. I also got a Hunter humidifier from Home Depot which works awesome not only for my guitars but for my health. Definately get a humidifier and the Planet Waves set.

I have a martin and I make sure that whenever I am not playing it that it gets stored in the case with a guitar humidifier. I use damp-it

You can usually get these for $14-$16. A very good investment if you have spent a lot of money on your guitar.
