Upright Bass AnyonE?

Topics about musical instruments other than guitar should go here. There's bound to be a Carter, LeRoi, or Yo-Yo Ma out there.

Upright Bass AnyonE?

Unread post by slapman24 » Sun Apr 20, 2003 1:38 am

Hey everybody! long time no see!
I've been busy with everything and a lot of happenings... got qualified as an EMT in Massachusetts and began playin with my old band again, so here i am looking for little things to get inspiration from hehe.... but anyways I have a question... ANYBODY PLAY THE UPRIGHT BASS ANYMORE!!
I've been playing it for about three years and I prefer it to the electric because of the richness of the sound and it's beauty is like no other... Try playing certain bass lines from DMB such as Crush and you'll notice that its deeper and fuller sound adds so much texture to the quality... mmm mm good, well i'll be floatin around, cya !

I really really want to learn to play stand up. I am trying to convince anyone in my town to teach me to play.

I've been playing upright for about a year now, and you're right, it does add a certain richness to a lot of songs. Dave in particular, I think. Me and a friend jam on guitars Dave and Tim style, but after a while I have to pull out the upright and see how much better the jam can get.

Electric does pale in comparison, it's too easy! I need the challenge of a fretless bass instrument for some reason.

Ever done any classical work? I've been playing arco bass parts for an orchestra in Nashville, I gotta say, it's really changed my perception of the instrument (I plowed into jazz too early, too fast).

yes me too... I started the upright last year just for the jazz band and never thought about classical too much, but when i started lessons with my teacher all he did was teach classical (where's the Jazz?), although now I've become one to realize classical pieces where a godsend to begin with... then after learning the basic notes and stuff Jazz came like a snap of my fingers (er, which is easy :-p )

I haven't played with a symphony but i plan on it next year, for now i'm pluckin away with jazz jazz jazz!

Yes I've started playing stand up..I got a senoir at my high school to teach me. It's classical stuff, but like you said i gotta get that stuff down first. If you're looking for a challenge try a fretless electric. I've got one and it's not easy. But it's fun and adds a great tone you can't get out of an electric with frets.

rock on man! who's bass are you using? I'm still yet to buy one, thankfully I've been able to "borrow" my school's since no one else is in need... still shopping. Remember to keep at it, it's so much fun when you get it down.. you'll be able to play along with everything, it's great!

I've put my acoustic bass in a stand, and put it on a table, and played it upright that way.

I know Soul Coughing pretty much used only an upright (I think double) bass.
