you're right, it's not exactly the same as all the rest of the albums, change is bad. it means nothing that the band likes the new album, and in their own words had the best summer in a long time directly after it. that sure does suck.Nitro1515 wrote:no. we fear uninspired, garbage music which is what the majority of SU is.tbillie41 wrote:it's not exactly like t he music we made 10 years ago so our "hardcore" fans will hate it. they fear change.

BTCS was change as well and you don't hear anybody ripping on it. You want to know why? Because it was the best music they ever made. So don't give me this BS that hardcore fans fear change because they clearly don't. And I don't know the band on a personal level, why should I care how much fun they are having? All I care about is the quality of music they make and SU is sub par so I'd rather they be pissed off at each other and make another LWS then be hearing all about how happy they are making a shitty album like SU.tbillie41 wrote:you're right, it's not exactly the same as all the rest of the albums, change is bad. it means nothing that the band likes the new album, and in their own words had the best summer in a long time directly after it. that sure does suck.Nitro1515 wrote:no. we fear uninspired, garbage music which is what the majority of SU is.tbillie41 wrote:it's not exactly like t he music we made 10 years ago so our "hardcore" fans will hate it. they fear change.

the end of dmb as a real jam band (imo anyway) was BTCS. it was also the end of a method of recording, and song writing and how the band worked together. BTCS absolutely is the best music the band ever made, and yes, SU is sub-par compared to it, but it's by no means bad music. think about it in perspective of all the other crap out there and tell me what you'd rather listen to.Nitro1515 wrote:BTCS was change as well and you don't hear anybody ripping on it. i keep thinking this. if you win a gold medal at the olympics (btcs) sure a bronze the next go round sucks, but it ain't that bad.
i think you are right in saying that hardcore (old school) fans don't fear change, but here's why I think that's true. the people that (in my experience) want so badly for the badn to go back to the old ways are the ones who missed out on it the first time through. it's the people who really got into them as btcs was winding down and everyday (now there's a bad album) was getting ever closer.

I guess I'm just tired of hearing that excuse from a lot of fans. I judge this band based on what they have done in the past, not what they sound like compared to the other stuff that's out there. And ever since the Lillywhite debacle in 2000 this band, which was once on its way to being something really special, has fizzled out with its last couple studio efforts. Now as for your other points, I've been a diehard fan since 1994 and I don't really care if they get back to their roots or not. I just want them to make good music again in the studio and now with each passing album it seems like that is turning into more and more of a pipe dream. I guess I'm just tired of telling myself "Oh the next one will be good", I can only tell myself that so many times before I give up on them.tbillie41 wrote:the end of dmb as a real jam band (imo anyway) was BTCS. it was also the end of a method of recording, and song writing and how the band worked together. I honestly dont find anything wrong with Stand Up. Take it as you will, but I dont find anything wrong with it. And Ive heard all of your reasons on why you think it sucks, and for each reasons I have my own reason on why it isnt as bad as you say it is. But I really wish we could stop talking about this album...

I don't mind it at all, in fact there are only one or two songs that I don't care for, the rest I like to see pop up in sets now and then. I love Bayou, I actually like Dreamgirl unlike most here (except when its 12 minutes long) I like HFTGL, etc etc. Alot of good stuff on it IMO. It's a lighter mood and light lyrics but it doesn't suck by any means.Beauford33 wrote:I honestly dont find anything wrong with Stand Up. Take it as you will, but I dont find anything wrong with it. i've been a fan since 1995 and i agree with you on some points. i'm not as disappointed with SU. Everyday was terrible, Busted Stuff was a letdown after hearing the LWS and I personally think SU stands on it's own.Nitro1515 wrote:I guess I'm just tired of hearing that excuse from a lot of fans. Sure, every now and then is fine. But ODH at 3/3 shows is not cool.i like tictacs wrote:I don't mind it at all, in fact there are only one or two songs that I don't care for, the rest I like to see pop up in sets now and then. Honestly, the only songs from SU I'd care to ever hear again are Louisiana Bayou, Hello Again, and the American Baby Intro. MAYBE You Might Die Trying, but even that one's a stretch. Dream Girl is a borefest, especially when it's like 15 minutes long, and HFTGL is just awful.

I think American Baby is the best song on the album. Maybe if Hello Agin wasn't slicked up quite so much from the tour versions... Dreamgirl is way better live than on the album, HFTGL I like a lot, both on the Cd and live. Bayou pretty much kicks ass, AB Intro is phenomenal live, and ODH is weak, period.
That being said Stand Up is easily the worst album the band has ever done. Sure it's easy to compare it to the garbage that fills the airwaves now, but that's apples to oranges. If we compare apples to apples (DMB to DMB) Stand Up is a rotting festering apple, full of worms and lying in the mud.
I still listen to it sometimes, though. It's different from all the band's other stuff, and frankly, I like apples better than oranges.
So maybe Stand Up should have been called "Rotten Apples."

I wish the stand up songs were played live for a tour before the studio. It seems like a bunch of the songs have evolved nicely after being played live, but mostly suck ass on the album. The album lacks depth in my mind, not good songs. Not to bring up mr. hip hop again but batson may not be qualified enough to capture the essence that is DMB. Better name for album: Rosemary's Baby.

Most of the songs were written in the studio and rushed when recorded. Dream Girl was written in one night. And American Baby, along with many other songs on the album, evolved from a single violin riff (or chord progression for other songs). So the songs being played live was an impossibility. I do think that this album would have been better if most of the songs had time to be played on tour and get better. One thing I don't understand is why they dont make studio versions of their live songs and make an album out of that.briguy945 wrote:I wish the stand up songs were played live for a tour before the studio.
