for some people part of the fun of doing a cover contest or just recording any song is to mess around with the recording process itself. i know i have fun with it sometimes, and i also have fun doing one shots to see what i can do to improve, but there's been a lot of talk about true "talent" and whatnot and i think it's bullshit.
just do what you want. if the voters want to take showmanship into account, they will. i've listened to some great covers with the crappiest sound quality and some horrid covers with great sound quality. i think showmanship is taken into account, but it's easier on the ears when the cover sounds great and it helps boost the song, too.
but i'm probably wrong. i'm rambling because i'm sick and my head's a little woozier than usual, but that's all right.
as for editing mess ups, i usually just tone down my breathing if it overtakes a track or if i bump against the chair or something.

I agree with you on everyone but I wanted to point out that you neglect the possibility that multiple tracks were used that were single-takes.. as mine very much so was. It's not hard to find tons of errors on my Stone.. the singing was terrible.. the bass part was made-up on the spot.. and the drumming got all messed up at a bunch of spots were carter normally does cool shit that I couldn't pull off.
But yes, I did clean things up after the fact.. but the process of clean-up afterwards is just a routine thing.. anything that I _record_ I want to sound "ok" at least 'cause it will be sticking around for a while.. that's the difference between a live cover and a recorded cover. So, I can understand why people will do several runs on it and clean it up, because it will linger for longer than a couple hours after the set is over.

each track on my stone recording only took one or two takes also.
multitracking is not a sign of talent, NEITHER is doing it on one track or one take
just play the damn song and record it

I know this is all for fun, but the last cover I did, The Stone, was a single take, it took quite a few times to get decent, and I didn't spend time tweeking or making each phrase perfect. I was just playing and singing at the same time into a mic.
......but, correct me if I'm wrong, the top three were all multi-track recordings.

uhh...
I used one track without even any reverb...no tweeking...I hadn't played the song before that for about 8 months before at my schools talent show...which I didn't place
but I know where you are coming from...at least I understand...

the poll was 7 days, so it will end this tuesday - i've been thinking all week about how many tracks - i've been reading everyone's responses, and how would everyone feel about 2 instrumental and 2 vocal tops?

These things are normally an organizational nightmare around here. Someone repost with the final song choice, track limit, and due date. We'll also need someone to keep track off the entries. I know TrippnBill686 had a system set up at one point. Maybe that's still available? If anyone needs Web hosting I can host a song or two but I can't do everybody's.

My system is still available, of course. I'll be as uninvolved or as involved as you all want me to be (i.e., i'll just set up the system, or i'll run the whole thing, me don't care). I can host people's on my home server, but that has a 40 KB/s upload cap, so it won't be fast. Only use me as a last result.

We need people to vote! Spoon and Crush are tied, and the contest rules and stuff will hopefully be out either tomorrow or Wednesday.
Or, if you've already voted for another song, post your vote in here between Spoon and Crush.
THANKS!
