Pat's strum hand magik

Pat I'm checking out your videos... these are great and have helped me a lot. I'm such a beginner though I can't get the right hand 'chucks' and 'mutes' to sound good like yours. If you ever get time, a video of your strum hand... umm... strumming... would be super. Or a video of the whole guitar while you're playing. I'm specifically working on Ants Marching.

Well, my strumming hand isn't as perfect as you'd think. I tend to fall into some bad habits. I'd suggest looking at a DMB dvd to check out Dave's strumming hand.

Give yourself time, you'll develop the a good strum.

I think it's best to start off with simple up and down strokes (heh heh) when first learning. You can't really get into Dave sounding stuff until you have a firm grasp on the basics. :lol:

I agree it took me quite some time to be able to strum Ants Marching. I remember I started playing by picking the notes and then it was down strums and then it was full strumming.

Pat, what are some bad habits that you do when strumming? Just wondering to see if I do them too.

My main problem is keeping my middle, ring, and pinky fingers of my right hand tucked in. I have a habit of letting them slip on occasion. A big portion in smooth playing is making sure your right hand is in optimum position.

Seriously though, Pat, you're videos have helped me immensely and I want to thank you for putting those up as well as our main dude of this site, Kanter for beginning the site to begin with. I went a long way looking at the tabs on the site but then with your videos - was never able to get the ones on the site to work for some reason - I really was able to pick up some invaluable lesson time. I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm certainly no Dave Matthews and I freeze up like a mo fo in front of people but your videos gave me a feeling for the structure... and I appreciate that fo' sho'.. keep up the good work dude, you got skillz to pay da billz.

Question Pat:

I've been used to strumming with my middle, ring and pinky stretched out, but after seeing some Dave videos I noticed that, like you said, the middle, ring and pinky are tucked in. Is this just Dave's favoured position, or is it, technically speaking, considered the way to go among top guitarists?

Are we talking about holding a pick? because i can't strum if i hold the pick with just my thumb and pointer. THe pick always slips.
