Gosh darn it all, I have been working at Grey Street for the last several days and I just dont know how Dave does those muting techniques between notes, is there some sort of trick to doing it without using your fingers instead of a pick?

i kind of mute the a and d string with my index finger, kind of hard to explain, just keep working at it

I'm new at this so I don't know how much help I can be and might lead you further astray. That said, I talked to a friend of mine today about this very thing. A picture would be better but I'll try to describe what he showed me. He said there were two main ways you could mute A and D.
1) If you play E with your index finger then let that finger fall across the rest of the strings almost like a barre but of course lightly to get the mute.
2) Say you decide to play E with your middle finger (or even ring) that leaves your index finger in a good position to barre lightly across A and D. And this way you can actually let it fall across all the strings if you like since it won't have the effect of muting E and G.

I started practicing this and it sounds better already. Not good... but better... :-)

3) u mute the strings w/ the ring finger (the one u are using on the low E)

Generally I'll mute the A string with whichever finger I'm playing the low E with and the D with whchever finger I'm plying the G with. The --7xx7 and the --6xx5 with my ring and pinky, the --4xx3 and the --2xx2 with my index and middle. Otherwise I use the low E finger to mute both.

On all the songs where Dave uses that little riff, like Grey Street Billies, SDL, and Granny, he does not mute the remainder of the strings. The progression sounds much better with the open d,b, and e strings droning in the background. The only muting is palm muting.

the open sounds right, the open b and e suck
anyway, i'm 100% sure that dave does mute the d and a string

yup and you play the way that is comfortable to you when you get used to that you'll probably change to a different way!

I personally like to let the D string ring out on all the chords example (7x07xx). I think it sounds a lot fuller and better. But everyone has different tastes. If you use all 4 fingers like dave does your hands should be already in good position to mute the strings in between chords. Just let a little pressure off of the strings so they are muted. A video would definately help.
