dave's voice while fun as hell to imitate to an extent isn't that great.. on that note there are of course some songs that i think his voice is amazing... Typical Situation for one.
I agree most people that don't like DMB (i was one at one point.. but i my opinion has changed) couldnt get into them because of his voice.. its not that good. But i like it now becuase when he sings its all about fun.... its the passion that was mentioned.. thats what you want.. if you have a good voice, and you show your excitement in your singing .. others will be excited and appreciate what your doing... keep it up and maybe youl bee the next musical genious

um i guess i'll indulge in some fanboy discussion...
the timbre or sound quality of dave's voice primarily comes from two places 1) smoking (he smoked/smokes) heavily this gives you the "rough" sound. 2) nasal singing... again related to smoking, but yeah he sings through his nose.
