DL-4 or GS-10

Unread post by mattinbeloit » Thu Nov 10, 2005 1:26 am

I have been looking into buying a line 6 DL-4 for a while now but recently found out about the Boss GS-10. Now granted i will not be buying these for live work but mostly recording and messing around so the fact that the DL-4 is more portable and user friendly in a live situation is irelevent. What i want to know is do you think i will be able to get most of the DL-4 sounds out of the GS-10? If ppl. own these what do you think of them? Also, how does the DL-4 react with an acoustic hooked into it which will probably be its primary use with me? Thanks.

I have a dl-4 and I love it...I never use the other delays, I only loop. I run my acoustic through it and it sounds great ...especially when you do percussion beats...I haven't tried the GS-10

It's bound to have a 1/4" out, so you could plug earphones into that. You may need an adaptor ($2) if you have phones with the mini plug.

I've got a DL4 - works great w/acoustic. I don't think you can use the out jack of it for headphones though. I've tried, even w/the 2 dollar adapter and it doesn't work, I believe b/c of the differing line levels (someone more well versed in this can correct me or elaborate). However, you can get a cheap Behringer mixer (or something similar) and plug into that which does have a headphone jack. That's usually what I do when i want to go into quiet mode w/my DL4. Also, if you're going to be messing around, a cheap mixer like this is a great investment to get audio onto your computer where you can mess around with it even more. Even if you have no interest in ever recording original or covered material, I find recording to be a great practice tool.

[Edit] And here's a picture of the DL4 too - it's also got 6 holes on the back. Stereo ins and outs, an input for the Line6 expression pedal and a place to plug in the AC adapter.

I bought a DL-4 to do some howie day songs... it sounds really good with my acoustic/electric setup.

I have hooked up studio headphones to the 1/4 out. you will be able to hear sounds - granted you have to completely crank your pickup levels. It's really not good to mix and match line / mic levels so I wouldn't recommend plugging headphones into the DL-4

you CAN input the DL-4 to a small mixer, or you computer though, and play with headphones that way.

Does anyone know of any DL-4 looping threads / forums? I can loop parts of dave songs (ie satellite, jimi thing) then play fills over top, sounds incredible.. anyone else out there do solo versions of tim & dave?

I've been thinking of buying something for looping. Difference for me is, I want to be able to run XLR to it to mic my percussion, along with the guitar's pickup output.

I've always been a bit apprehensive about the DL4 because it has like 14 seconds of loop, which I don't think would be enough for me. Granted, I've not tried it, but that's my fear.

Any recommendations/experience/etc. is helpful.

no, it can do 28 seconds in one mode, and 14 in the other

when recording in 14 second mode, you can hit the fourth button which slows loop to half speed

when recording in 28 second mode, you can hit the fourth button which speeds up 1/2 speed - fast and high pitched.

I loop the song "a pirate looks at forty" - (jimmy buffet) which is like 26-27 seconds fingerpicked, then i strum chords over top. sounds so money. I'll post it if you want
