hey guys, i've been sitting at my computer for like 2 hours watching videos, looking at tabs, and trying to play songs like warehouse and satellite. but i can't seem to get my pinky finger to cooperate and it totally screws up the song. does anybody use their ring finger to fix this? or is it just something im gonna have to keep working at until it finally clicks?

Yeah, you really need to use your pinkies. There's a reason that the world isn't chock-full of 3 fingered guitar masters. That reason is that there aren't really that many people with 3 fingers, but even if there were 4 fingered people would still rule the earth and umm guitar playing. Okay.. I haven't slept in about 30 hours or so, and I think it's starting to show.

the stone (although difficult at first) is really a good song to learn really slowly...the speed will come...but the thing is, you need your pinky in this one as well, and the tabs to the stone will force you to practice using all fingers and therefore over time improve you finger dexterity and speed..

def, stone is a great song to learn how to use your pinky. also
long black veil
trippin billies as prev mentioned
any of the songs w/ similar chords as TB, (grey street, granny etc)
all the 5th's songs, satellite, 34
but either way, you definetly have to learn to use your pinky, its vital.

that pinky is important to all guitar playing. you open up large amount of chords just by using all 4 fingers. and scales reguarly have full steps so being able to stretch out there with the pinky is important. i just can't tell you how much i use my pinky. next to my index, it is second most important in my playing. i regularly fret with my pinky what most people would use their ring finger for so that i can slide it up a couple of frets and add quick riffs otherwise simple chordal songs.

i don't think the stone is a good first song to learn for your pinky increasing its strength. I learned how to play Stone before Billies and Billies seemed a lot harder. You can pretty much just slap down your pinky without having any strength, but to make that long stretch in billies nature intro forces u to push down on the string real hard with it.

i dont know, i can play the stone pretty well but every time i try to play the whole song all the way through, i feel like my pinky finger is gonna shrivel up and fall off... builds up a lot of strength, that song definitely takes some "pinky endurance"
wow i made a new guitar term

i use to play LIOG with my ring finger, but then one day after playin many numerous other songs with my pinky, it just sorta clicked and i use my pinky probably 80% of the time now ...its useful once you are comfortable with it

oh yea, i forgot about LIOG.
and ive never really had problems w/ my pinky on TB. Crash is good for pinky endurance, cause it's pressing down like the entire time, starts to get good and sore by the end when you first start.

once you learn how to use your pinky too, slides become considerably easier!

I think we need to have daily morning guitar aerobics. Tomorrow, we shall gather and focus on the pinky. Then, on friday, we will focus on the streches. Alright, let's get a good night sleep, and then we can get up in the morning and get those fingers moving and plucking! *all in a richard simmons voice*
