Singing...While simultaneously playing!?!?

This is the place to talk about guitar playing not done by Dave! Topics about techniques, styles, theory, and other guitarists go here.

Singing...While simultaneously playing!?!?

Unread post by wAvy » Tue Nov 01, 2005 10:23 pm

I Just can not get the hang of singing and playing a song on the guitar, it's like patting my head and rubbing my stomach. I can, however, sing when the lyrics are in key and in melody with the song. As in I pronounce a word in the same key as the the chord, which I know is terrible in most cases. Does anyone have any hints or suggestions, or will it just come to me one day?

Ive been playing for a while, and I can only do it with songs I know by heart, frontwards and backwards. I cant sing for shit though so I hardly ever try. This topic gets brought up a lot, heres some links that might have some insight that I cant offer. Hopefully they help, and Im sure someone else will chime in with their advice by tomorrow if not tonight.

practice practice practice. thats all there is to it. like jayme said you have to know the songs backward and forward, at least that really helps. learn to play the song, then slowly try to play it and sing together. but like i said, not much else you can do but practice it, keep playing and singing and eventually it should come to you. good luck man

btw, how long have you been playing for?

Yeah I figured it gets bought up alot, I probably should have searched first, but thanks anyway. ALSO...

Could someone post a video or redirect me to a good Ants Marching while we're here? If not that's ok, I just need some help with the incessant sliding from 4-5 and 5-7 then back to D in .001 seconds.

Hopefully, a voice isn't the only determining factor on whether or not one can sing...that would suck.

I've been playing for 2.5 years now, but I should note that I have been playing everyday for at least 4 hours in those years and scouring the internet for information and guitar knowledge.

Thank you very much, also if you want to lock/delete this thread go for it, I got the links and I know it can be annoying to have multiple, similar topics flying around.

Hey I've been wanting to ask the same question. I figured someone would probably say something stupid or ignorant so i didnt ask. It gets old only being able to sing wild thing while playing. So thanks for posting. And i would also like to see the ants marching video. Its so much easier to be able to see it in person and not on paper.

We fuck around with each other a lot becuase weve all been on here for a long time and are "friends" But we dont want new members to ever think they cant ask for help in something they might need. If you ever have any questions dont be afraid to ask, someone will more than likely always help.

The way I learned to do it is to read aloud while you play. Try it. It's harder than just singing and it helped me a lot.

Some people can sing and play naturally, with little or no practice. It just takes me and you longer to do what some can do naturally, that is all.
