i was a clapton fan long before i took to dave, and whilst he is technically perfect and an example for his genre to follow, i found dave to be the more original and exciting guitarist, there are many jazz and blues bars near me where you can hear people play in a clapton style with the same levil of proficency and whilst they are good they dont excite me to hear. clapton simply plays and sings in the classic blues style that can be traced back to long longbefore him,
dave i find mixes so many different styles, rythems and geners (jazz,blues,tango,flamenco,worldbeat,rock,salsa,beceno and funk....to name a few) within his own strum/mute sound.
im not saying dave technicaly is the better over-all guitarst or will be viewed as such in years to come, im sure clapton could play his songs if he tried...... but when you combine the energy, lyrics, groooooove, excitement, and originality of dave (let alone quality of his band) ........ davematthewsband are the best thing to happen to modern music in a long while.....................imo

back to the subject of the thread, the wwys jam is seriously cool but really needs a reynolds guitar, boyd violin or blues traveller mouth organ solo to keep it fun after 20 seconds so mix it up like hell, even if its not exactly in the right style or even key, just slide and mute a lot ,through in a few licks and play with the funk slides. my little clip is a one take attempt and thus not perfect, but it sounds (imo) more interesting than just playing the correct tab over and over, remember (guy who is playing it,) if you have fun playing and "dig" it , so will the auduence,

here's a change to that jam

once in a while with my band or even by myself i will take the jam part into purple haze by hendrix. The first chord of the jam is identical to the first chord of purple haze verse and then it is simply a g and then a in barred form from there. then we take it right back int wwys. always a little fun for variations.

yea you got it exactly, if you have the luxury of two or more guitars we sometimes will have one guy play the verse of purple haze quietly while the other does wwys jam and slowly get louder and eventually have the other guitar(s) join in which makes for a more subtle transition, but doing it right away works well too. all depends on the mood i guess.
