MWR, question about So Damn Lucky and modes
MWR, question about So Damn Lucky and modes
In your post you mentioned that the SDL chorus is in Em with the C implying the Dorian mode, but woudln't it be in D with the C acting as a VIIb, implying mixolydian? Because the chorus seems to resolve to D. Does it have to be one or the other or can it be thought of as both?
Is this all semantics anyway? As long as you don't play the C# over that C maj chord does it really matter what mode you "think" you're playing in?

Sometimes when I reflect on all the beer I drink I feel ashamed. Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the brewery and all of their hopes and dreams. If I didn't drink this beer, they might be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. I think, "It is better to drink this beer and let their dreams come true than be selfish and worry about my liver.

First off the A implies Dorian not the C. To me that progression definately resolves on Em. The D is a passing chord so I'm not quite sure how you're hearing it as the resololution.
Yes, technically it's semantics but to hear the tonal center is far more important than memorzing what notes are "right" or "wrong".

yea, I meant to say A, my bad. Thanks for the help though.

it can be either Em or G, because Em is the relative minor so the key of Em is exactly the same as G. It goes for everything else too, every major 6th tone of a major scale is the relative minor to the tonic(the first note) so another example you could say Grey Street is in Bm or D major.MWR wrote:First off the A implies Dorian not the C. (B is the major 6th of D)
Okay, but that has almost nothing to do with what we were discussing and when you're talking about modes and key centers is certainly does make a difference whether it's major or the relative minor.shaggy wrote:it can be either Em or G, because Em is the relative minor so the key of Em is exactly the same as G. MWR, thanks for the help. But how do you know for sure that the progression resolves to Em? Is it a matter of "hearing" it? I thought it would be D because the chorus starts on D and that last A chord suggests to me a V>I cadence. Sorry I'm just a little confused. Thanks again.
